Having performed on most renowned stages and music festivals of the country for over 15 years, the band blends influences ranging from Progressive Rock and Folk to Popular Brazilian Music (MPB), inheriting and incorporating the distinctive sounds from their home state of Minas Gerais. The results - harmonic fusions of handcrafted guitars, mandolin and bass, flute, drums and percussions, perfectly sewed vocals and poetry - are recorded in 1 single, 3 albums and a DVD, with over 10,000 copies sold.
The debut single, recorded in 1998, captivated a growing legion of fans astonished with the exceptional quality of the local music scene of which Cálix took part as a prominent member. In 2000, after releasing the first album “Canções de Beurin” (Songs from Beurin), Cálix gained national recognition, being awarded the Best Breakthrough Artist, Best Album and Best Performance of the year . Their second album, “A Roda” (The Wheel), released in 2002, crowned the versatility of the band, evolving from the previous powerful progressive recordings into carefully arranged melodies, creating dialogues between a classic orchestra, the rock ‘n’ roll style and Brazilian references, entwined with poetic lyrics that reflected a matured phase for the musicians. In 2003, the group ranked with the top 24 artists for the Visa Brazilian Popular Music Songwriters Award, among nearly 3000 applicants from all over the country.
The band has also attracted international attention, sharing the stage with the world’s most influential progressive rock bands such as the legendary “Focus” (The Netherlands) and the Italian “Il Baleto Di Bronzo”. Furthermore, their albums have been sold in Europe, Asia, Latin America and the United States.
In 2007, the band celebrated 10 years of a distinguished career recording the DVD “Cálix Ao Vivo” (Cálix Live) in a structured production that crowded Palácio das Artes - the most traditional theater venue of their hometown Belo Horizonte. Important local musicians were also featured in the concert, including percussionist Daniela Ramos and an orchestra led by maestro Rodrigo Garcia. A CD version of this performance was also released, entitled “Ventos de Outono” (Autumn Winds).
Cálix has maintained their original lineup with Renato Savassi (vocals, guitar, flute, and mandolin), Sânzio Brandão (guitar), Marcelo Cioglia (vocals and bass), André Godoy (drums and percussion), and Rufino Silvério (vocals and keyboards). This long lasting family-bound friendship is reflected into outstanding high quality music, capable of simultaneously remaining faithful to root sounds while taking music to elevated levels, innovating and experimenting new harmonically tailored combinations. The band is currently in studio recording their 4th album.
