Guv'nor
JJ DOOM Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning | Line by Line Meaning
From the fire vocaled
Ash and molten glass like
Eyjafjallajökull
The volcano out of Iceland
He'll conquer and destroy the rap world like the white men
Learnt from a pro as a mentor
Started with a bird nest and burnt it to a cinder
That'll get the party kicking
Plus your little charred body is smoldered like chicken
As the dollar continues to lose momentum
He need land from murdered indians that represent 'em
Gold is up, urging all thugs
Trade your chains for cash and splurge it on drugs
Or a more secure investment:
Food or water
A couple of gallons for your cutest daughter
And thank him as a Yankee fellow southerner
Don't forget the general rank, 'ello guv'nor
Vocals spill over like the rolling hills of Dover
Or the Gulf Oil Disaster if preferred you're after
Depends on your status or your stature
Whether you benefit from the prior or the later-er
Get the fatter check split
How much for 100,000 tons of correct shit
Sell a Chinese half-priced seafood
Price is like a real nice street dude
Who can knock the most dead birds out the sky
And then spread a lie
And then say he know why
I bet
Get the machine, blame it on the fireworks
Cleanup, y'all know when to send the wire, jerks!
Black teeth still snack on sweets
And get stacks with the qui mon qui
They use to sell CD's
Now they got fake weed
Seeds burning trees like potpourri
Buyer beware
Had to tell this one liar "sire be fair"
At least untie her hair from the chair while I'm there
I hate playing loving her, JJ for Governor
The lyrics of "Guv'nor" by JJ DOOM, a collaboration between hip-hop artist MF DOOM and producer Jneiro Jarel, are complex and multifaceted. The song begins with a reference to the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull and uses its ash and molten glass as a metaphor for the fiery, explosive nature of the vocals. The lyrics then suggest that the protagonist, represented by DOOM's alter ego JJ, will conquer and destroy the rap world like a white conqueror, drawing on the violent history of European colonization.
The reference to starting with a bird's nest and burning it to a cinder is a metaphor for JJ's rise to power and the destruction he leaves in his wake. The lyrics then turn to a critique of the capitalist system, urging the listener to trade traditional forms of currency, like chains, for drugs or more secure investments in food and water. The mention of murdered Native Americans is a nod to the ongoing legacy of colonialism and its impact on communities of color.
The second half of the song continues this critique of capitalist violence with references to the Gulf Oil Disaster and the sale of Chinese half-priced seafood. JJ is depicted as a kind of anti-hero, who can "knock the most dead birds out the sky" and "spread a lie" without consequence. The lyrics suggest a world where greed and corruption reign, and the only hope for survival is to be savvy and ruthless.

"NOT TO INTERRUPT, BUT ANYONE ELSE NOTICE TIME SPEEDING UP?" 2012 - 2022
Jneiro Jarel and MF DOOM turned in the JJ DOOM album after two years of recording. D attended all-day mastering sessions half a dozen times at vast expense. That summer, we shot a video for “Guv’nor” on the roof of the Truman Brewery with @niniandoff directing. D’s old homie @steveespopowers illustrated his lyrics for the sleeve art. Klaus Thymann shot the portraits against a London skyline.
There was an actual key for some actual cuffs. It appeared in D’s London flat after an unexplained incident. “Key To The Kuffs” might mean finding creative emancipation through his forced isolation, unlocking those shackles. The album is his most directly personal. The bars are top tier with a Byzantine matrix of internal rhymes and cross-references.
It’s the last album D released, where every aspect had his attention. He chose to flow outside the box. JJ’s beats are intense, sometimes very weird, and some are edits that D pieced together from JJ’s demos. The skits were handcrafted by metal fingers. The tight guestlist includes Beth Gibbons, Damon Albarn and Khujo Goodie.
Daniel Dumile (RIP) was one of the most prolific artists on Lex, releasing three studio albums as lead vocalist and one as a beatmaker. We spent a huge amount of time with him in the 2010s. He’ll be missed always.
