Founding members Chuck Robertson, Sascha Lazor, Todd Rosenberg, Carter Benson and James Malis started the group in high school but the band's membership has changed frequently since its inception. Drummer Todd Rosenberg left the band in 1999, Benson left the band in 2002, and bassist Mark Iversen left the band in 2006. The current lineup consists of:
* Chuck Robertson (lead vocals/rhythm guitar/primary lyricist)
* Sascha Lazor (lead guitar/banjo/primary composer),
* Keith Douglas (trumpet/backing vocals)
* Ed Hernandez (trombone)
* Brian Flenniken (drums/percussion),
* Cris Badham (bass guitar).
The band used to play under the name The Ivy League, but in 1996 they changed their name after signing to the Honest Don's Records label to avoid confusion (and potential litigation) with two prior bands that went by the same moniker. The band's debut album, Quality Soft Core, was released the following year. After the release of the album, the band was signed to Fat Mike's label Fat Wreck Chords, through which the Mad Caddies have since released 4 studio albums, an EP and a live album.

Drinking For 11

That's just what I do
When I'm not with you
My heart goes to bed
End of the bar
That's just where I'll be
Don't try and come find me
'Cause I'm already dead
With one eye tied
Upon the open road
I feel your presence
And I can't let it go
It moves so slowly
As it creeps into my mind
Steals every breath I have
And leaves my heart behind
Want to know what you're feeling
If you're feeling alone
I want to hear if you still care
The last time I remember you
Was the last time I wasn't scared
When the night starts fading
And the mornin' arrives
I want to still feel you around
Will you creep into my head again
And pick me up off the ground
Once more
And tell me what you're fighting for
Gotta try, gotta try for tomorrow
When you can't see through today
Gotta try, gotta try for tomorrow
When you can't see through today
There's nowhere left to stay, whoa
Sometimes I feel like
I'm out here all alone
Just one in a million
Stuck with no place left to go
The fear steps up to me
With every move that I make
Following close behind my soul
It wants to take
I want to know what you're feeling
If you're feeling alone
I want to hear if you still care
The last time I remember you
Was the last time I wasn't scared
When the night starts fading
And the mornin' arrives
I want to still feel you around
Will you creep into my head again
And pick me up off the ground
Once more
And tell me what you're fighting for
Gotta try, gotta try for tomorrow
When you can't see through today
Gotta try, gotta try for tomorrow
When you can't see through today
There's nowhere left to stay, whoa
Drinking for a living
That's just what I do
When I'm not with you
My heart goes to bed
The lyrics of Mad Caddies' "Drinking For 11" convey a sense of loneliness and longing for a lost love. The singer describes how when they are not with their loved one, they turn to drinking to numb their pain and fill the emptiness in their heart. The lyrics also touch on the fear that comes with being alone and the desire to still feel connected to their loved one even when they are apart.
The phrase "drinking for a living" suggests that the singer's drinking has become a lifestyle, rather than just a coping mechanism. They are struggling to deal with the pain of being apart from their loved one and the fear of being alone. With lines like "end of the bar, that's just where I'll be" and "I'm already dead," it becomes clear that the singer is using drinking as a way to escape their reality and the pain they are feeling.
The melancholic and yearning tone of the lyrics is carried by the somber melody of the song, which perfectly fits the emotions being conveyed. Overall, "Drinking For 11" is a powerful and emotional ballad about love, loss, and the struggle to come to terms with being alone.

Drinking for a living
My life is consumed by drinking
That's just what I do
It's my only source of stability
When I'm not with you
When you're not here to keep me sane
My heart goes to bed
My heart stops feeling anything
End of the bar
My permanent spot in this world
That's just where I'll be
I don't know where else to go
Don't try and come find me
I don't want to be found
'Cause I'm already dead
I'm not really living anyway
With one eye tied
Just barely hanging on
Upon the open road
My uncertain future
I feel your presence
I still need you
And I can't let it go
I'm not ready to move on
It moves so slowly
The pain is always present
As it creeps into my mind
As memories flood back
Steals every breath I have
Takes away my will to live
And leaves my heart behind
I can't let go of the pain
Want to know what you're feeling
I need to understand you
If you're feeling alone
If you need me too
I want to hear if you still care
I need to believe that we can fix this
The last time I remember you
The last time I was happy
Was the last time I wasn't scared
Before everything fell apart
When the night starts fading
When the darkness subsides
And the mornin' arrives
And the light shines through
I want to still feel you around
I still need you in my life
Will you creep into my head again
Will you haunt me again
And pick me up off the ground
And help me stand again
Once more
One more time
And tell me what you're fighting for
And make me believe in something again
Gotta try, gotta try for tomorrow
I have to keep moving forward
When you can't see through today
Even when it seems impossible
There's nowhere left to stay, whoa
I have to keep moving forward
Sometimes I feel like
I often feel like
I'm out here all alone
I'm on my own
Just one in a million
Just one insignificant person
Stuck with no place left to go
Lost and with nowhere to turn
The fear steps up to me
My fear comes to the forefront
With every move that I make
Every step is scary
Following close behind my soul
It's consuming me
It wants to take
It wants to destroy me
