He incorporated Italian and French stylistic elements but devised a peculiarly English style of Baroque music. Purcell is said to have been composing at nine years old, but the earliest work that can be certainly identified as his is an ode for the King's birthday, written in 1670.
His chamber opera Dido and Aeneas, which forms a very important landmark in the history of English dramatic music, may have had its earliest production in de early 1680's, well before the documented one of 1689. It was written to a libretto furnished by Nahum Tate, and performed in 1689 in cooperation with Josiah Priest, a dancing master and the choreographer for the Dorset Garden Theatre. It is occasionally considered the first genuine English opera, though that title is usually given to Purcell's teacher Dr. John Blow's Venus and Adonis. At the time, Dido and Aeneas never found its way to the theatre, though it appears to have been very popular in private circles.
René Jacobs (born October 30, 1946, Ghent) is a Belgian (Flemish) musician. He came to fame as a countertenor but in recent years has become renowned as a conductor of Baroque and early Classical operas and sacred and secular works. His recording of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro is especially renowned, having won such awards as Gramophone's Record of the Year for 2004, "Le Monde de la Musique"'s Choc of the Year for 2004 and a Grammy Award for "Best Opera recording of 2005". His "Dido & Aeneas" won (a.o.) an Editor's choice Gramophone.
