Bottlang studied at the conservatory in Lausanne and at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern. The mid-1970s he toured with his Orchestre à Musiques at several jazz festivals, including in Paris, Moers and Zurich. In addition, he also toured with his group Madame Schwab. In 1977 he moved to Paris and worked as a pianist and as a composer with musicians of the French jazz scene. Since 1978 he lived in the south of France. Since 1980 he has performed as a soloist (1980-2002 three solo albums), but also played in a duo with Michel Gaudry and with François Jeanneau. In 1983 he joined a trio with André Jaume and Bruno Chevillon on the Jazz Festival in Zurich. In 1987 he played in Lausanne with the pianist Mal Waldron. In the following years he also worked with Barre Phillips, Christian Lété, Chris Biscoe, Steve Lacy and Jean Querlier. In 1991 he was one of the founders of the quartet TBMT, accompanied by piano and drums in a double line-up. With his quintet and Phil Minton as a guest soloist In 1994 he recorded the album Hommage à Boby Lapointe. In 1995, he moved temporarily to Vienna which has been promoted performances with Franz Koglmann and an increased presence in Eastern Europe.
As a composer, he created commissioned works for festivals, the media and for the Berliner Konzerthaus am Gendarmenmarkt, wrote solo concertos and duo works.
