The twelve-strong collection included their two previous hits "Someone Out There" and "Nothing But a Heartache" as well as a potential chart topper "What's Good about Goodbye,my Love? "There was also the beautiful "South Carolina". The Flirtations possessed a unique vocal sound and a style that was completely their own. Their voices were beautiful.compelling and full of vitality on every note.

I agree tomshiba51. There are so many genius production elements in this song it will insanely "hook" you, and you won't know why. Hooks abound in this song; the lines, "He's got me oh why, can't I get him?" absolutely wreck me, I feel like Pavlov's salivating dog waiting for it. I'd love hear a remix with individual tracks discernible; but even then the "magic" (literally) in this cut could never be intellectually figured out. I'm a fan of 60's music, and I can't recall ever hearing this before - that in itself is pretty strange...

It was the timing as well. In reality The Supremes were the only "Girl Group" to survive The British Invasion in 1964 with The Beatles. In 1967 they lost their Songwriting Trio of Holland-Dozier-Holland and their popularity on the Charts waned. Girl Groups at that time had pretty much dried out and Martha & The Vandellas and The Marvelettes careers were pretty much over.

Yep. Magnificent ear-grabbing opening. Incredible sound for an early production. They sound nothing like The Supremes. I would never have guessed The Flirtations but I never would have guessed The Supremes nor Martha and the Vandellas.
They are talented enough to stand on their own.
The song reminds me so much of the music of Vietnam era. A sad legacy of war fraught with songs the 'Nam didn't deserve to have associated with it...I was just a young Canadian kid who followed the news on t.v. and lost an uncle on Dec 25, 1968 in operation "Speedy Express, in the Mekong Delta. He was one of the Canadian volunteers who went to Vietnam because he didn't believe the American boys should have to fight the war themselves.
Stupid bastard died 3 days short.

Yep. Their timing was bad because The Girl Group Phenomenon had petered out after The British Invasion. Even The Supremes popularity had waned on the Charts after Holland/Dozier/Holland left in 1967 the same year that Florence Ballard got fired.

They hardly play anything on the oldies stations like this anymore, because they don't want to take the time to find this good music in there libraries, when was the last time you heard some of the great Motown groups on these stations, you don't artists
like, Wilson Pickett, Gary Puckett, Sam Cooke, or the Tymes, these Oldies stations are big disappointment period.

I remember hearing this song back in 1993. I was listening to AM Radio, WHNE or Honey Radio (oldies) in Detroit. The station only broadcasted during daylight hours. This song was the last song that before before they signed off. I had just lost me job of over 15 years and was heartbroken. This song described how I felt! A great song!

What an awesome gem! Their follow-up, "South Carolina" from July 1969 failed to chart. Released on February 22, 1969 reaching 34 on May 24. Great memories of 1969.

I called a DJ on the radio to play this song back in 1989, he thought I wanted Nothing But Heartaches by the Supremes ((another classic). I finally got him to realize what song I wanted, aftet he played it, he raved on and on about it, and started featuring it regularly on the Super Gold show in

I haven't heard this one in decades! Somehow, this tune sounds like it's from an earlier time (like 1965). Dynamic vocals backed by a "wall of sound" (ala Phil Spector). Just heard this song for the first time (don't know how I missed it!) on an oldies radio program and it blew me away! Sung with such verve & conviction, and the musical accompaniment was great! One of my favorite records of the late 1960's. The sound on this record is mountainous (even the piano introduction is huge...and perfect). The Flirtations' vocals are plenty strong enough to cut through and get their point across. This record should have gone at least top 5, but judging from what did make it back then, it was just too good. In my opinion, not a whole lot of records hold up as well today as this one does.

What an outstanding record by The Flirtations, MusicMike ! I absolutely love everything about it. It should've been a #1 hit. If I am not mistaken, I believe the songwriters and producer Wayne Bickerton and Tony Waddington were also band members of The Pete Best Four/Combo in the mid-60's too.

I haven’t heard this song in years but it really brings back memories. They must have played this a lot in Detroit because I remember it very well. It was probably a top 10 record in Detroit.
