Dancing in the Street
Martha Reeves & The Vandellas Lyrics

Calling out around the world
Are you ready for a brand new beat?
Summer's here and the time is right
For dancing in the street

They're dancing in Chicago (dancing in the street)
Down in New Orleans (dancing in the street)
In New York City (dancing in the street)

All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swinging, swaying, and records playing
Dancing in the street

Oh, it doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there
So come on, every guy, grab a girl
Everywhere around the world

They'll be dancing (dancing in the street)
They're dancing in the street (dancing in the street)

It's an invitation across the nation
A chance for folks to meet
There'll be laughing, singing, and music swinging
Dancing in the street

Philadelphia, PA (dancing in the street)
Baltimore and D.C. now (dancing in the street)
Can't forget the Motor City (dancing in the street)

All we need is music, sweet music (sweet music)
There'll be music everywhere (everywhere)
There'll be swinging, swaying, and records playing
Dancing in the street

Oh, it doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there
So come on, every guy, grab a girl
Everywhere around the world

They're dancing
They're dancing in the street (dancing in the street)
Way down in L.A. (dancing in the street)
Every day, they're dancing in the street (dancing in the street)
Let's form a big, strong line (dancing in the street)
Get in time, we're dancing in the street (dancing in the street)
Across the ocean blue (dancing in the street)
Me and you, we're dancing in the street (dancing in the street)

[Verse 1]
Calling out around the world
Are you ready for a brand new beat
Summer's here
And the time is right
For dancing in the street

They're dancing in Chicago
Down in New Orleans
Up in New York City

[Hook]
All we need is music
Sweet music
There'll be music everywhere

There'll be swinging
Swaying
And records playing
Dancing in the street

[Chorus]
Oh
It doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long
As you are there

So come on
Every guy
Grab a girl
Everywhere around the world
They'll be dancing
They're dancing in the street

[Verse 2]
It's just an invitation
Across the nation
A chance for folks to meet

There'll be laughing
Singing
Music swinging
Dancing in the street

Philadelphia, PA
Baltimore and D.C. now
Can't forget the Motor City

[Hook]
All we need is music
Sweet music
There'll be music everywhere

There'll be swinging
Swaying
And records playing
Dancing in the street

[Chorus]
Oh
It doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long
As you are there

So, come on
Every guy
Grab a girl
Everywhere
Around the world
Dancing
They're dancing in the street

Way down in L.A
Every day
(Dancing in the street)
Across the ocean blue
Me and you
We're dancing in the street
(Dancing in the street)

This is David Gilmour’s favourite song - if it’s good enough for the main man of one of the greatest bands ever I guess I’ll have to add it to my playlist

Really. I never knew that. One of the greatest of the many great Motown classics. I can't hear this and not smile, and instantly feel better about the world. Pink Floyd's been my favorite musical act since I was about 12. I keep thinking that might change, then it never does. I never got to see Pink Floyd proper, but I'll always be grateful to have seen David and Roger in concert. Both in Chicago. Saw Roger do 'The Wall' at Wrigley Field in 2012. One of the best days of my life. Incredible piece of music.

Marvin Gaye is actually the drummer on this track. I know it sounds ridiculous, but early on in his career he actually was known to compose and play drums.

Joseph Edwards

Bro no wayyyy????
thats insane

Panagiotakis Takis

I believe that the drummer is Freddie Waits on this one.

Tillery Johnson

Didn't know that about Marvin. So you probably know that Maurice White was also a drummer.

Dam Ram

Right on Matt! Now he's singing and playing drums alongside many other music greats up there on The Night Shift.

Dæmon Visigoth

Thanks for the trivia.

Beats the hell out of anything on the radio today.

shut up and don't listen to the radio then. there's so much music out there loved by so many different people. just cus this song is bomb doesn't mean you need to shit on other music. can't you just enjoy the existence of all of it, that there's sooooo many different sounds and it's amazing?

anyway.
I'm glad I got to hear this version, especially since the jagger/bowie version is more popular. this is the recording that popularized the song after all. it's very different but I like it!
