Churchill is famous for his command of the British Empire during World War II, and specifically his refusal to surrender to Nazi Germany, as well as his great powers of oratory.
Although distinguished before World War II, the war years were doubtless his finest hours, with his execution of the war and his infallible belief in victory even when all seemed lost being vital to the eventual success of the allies. Churchill made a series of classic speeches during this time, notably his speech after the fall of France in 1940, with the famous "We shall fight them on the beaches..." line, and his speeches after the success of the Battle of Britain, also in 1940, during which he uttered the famous line, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few" - a line which has become figurative of World War II itself.
