Ghost
Devin Townsend Project Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How, everybody?
How about a body at moonlight
How about a body at home
How about a body at moonlight,
How our body’s alone
I don’t want to bother your moonlight
I don’t want to bother your soul
I don’t want to bother your moonlight
How our body’s alone
Say, Cold
Cold,
Cold.
How about a body at moonlight
How about a body at home
How about a body at moonlight,
How our body’s alone
I don’t want to bother your moonlight
I don’t want to bother your soul
I don’t want to bother your moonlight
How our body’s alone
Say, Cold
Cold,
Ghost.

Tonight.

Bathe in the light…

It’s alright.

Say, Cold
Ghost…
Ghost…

I’m out of body at moonlight
I’m out of body at home
I’m out of body at moonlight
How our body’s alone
I don’t want to bother your moonlight
I don’t want to bother your soul
I don’t want to bother your moonlight,
How our body’s alone

Tonight, tonight.

Soothe your mind.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Devin Townsend Project’s song, Ghost, are open to interpretation since there doesn't appear to be a clear story, but certain themes and emotions can be derived. Perhaps the most notable theme is loneliness and solitude. The first stanza repeats the questions “How about a body at moonlight, how about a body at home?”, followed by an acknowledgement of the singer’s loneliness, “How our body’s alone.” The following lines are a plea to not disturb someone else’s “moonlight,” or peaceful solitude. The repetition of “Cold” could suggest a sense of detachment, either from the person the singer is addressing or from the outside world altogether. The final declaration of “Ghost” could imply a feeling of being disconnected or non-existent.

Musically, Ghost is a slow, calming, and meditative track, allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in the emotional weight of the lyrics. The repetition of certain words and phrases also adds to this sense of meditation and reflection. The inclusion of “Say” before the word “Cold” could suggest that the singer is either calling out to someone or simply addressing themselves.

There is an eerie sense of detachment and quietness throughout the song, and the final lines, “I’m out of body at moonlight, I’m out of body at home” imply a sort of out-of-body experience or detachment from reality. The final line, “Soothe your mind” could suggest that the song is meant to provide comfort to those who feel lost or disconnected.

It always surprises me how many people fail to think outside the metal box. They often want to pigeon hole artists and, once they have learnt to like what they do in one particular genre, to refuse to give the artist the freedom to explore their different musical talents. Devin is a man who does not conform. He does what he wants and sets incredibly high standards. I love SYL as much as I love things Devin does on the other side of the musical spectrum. No, he has not lost his balls. I'm sure he's saving them for later. In the mean time I sit back, relax and enjoy a unique talent, so rare in the music industry that I cannot name anyone with the same amount of courage. Talking about having balls!

Joop Klepzeiker Little do people know, Hevy Devy is the epitome of an artist who writes from soul. He doesn't write FOR fans. He writes from his emotions. Let's not forget how great of a musician he actually is, and song writer, and producer. Would GWAR get a dud to produce one of their records? Don't answer that, please.

@bodogger86

Incredibly well said

@rerditirerthz5568

@Onikage people outside from Devy fanbase i guess...

@KhalDrogo76

Like Dev said, who eats the same thing for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, etc? Lunatics thats who

@inaldor

Perfect... 100% agreed.

thanks! Yep, that's my background vocal. The live tracks do sound clean. Tracks direct into the board, "in ear" monitors, with no stage monitors helped. The hall (Union Chapel) was a pleasure to play too, both visually and acoustically.

@CJ_3000

I love your part! It really adds a lot to the melody.. Nice job! And very clean, it sounds like the album.

@gary swift Thanks Gary! I enjoyed recording and performing with Devin. He is a dear friend and amazing human being! He first heard my Space Music when it was originally released as Emerald Web albums in 1980 and 1981 ("Sound Trek" and "Valley of the Birds") Those 2 albums were recently remastered and rereleased. https://www.katepple.com/emeraldweb-valleyofthebirds
