8:05
Moby Grape Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Eight-oh-five
I guess you're leaving soon
I can't go on without you
Its useless to try

To love you would be so good
To keep you would be so wonderful
Here is my heart that I give
It's all that I have

Please change your mind
Before my sunshine is gone
Do you think you can try?
Do you think you can try?
Do you think you can try?

Please change your mind
Before my sunshine is gone
Do you think you can try?
Do you think you can try?
Do you think you can try?

Please understand how I feel
Until I can prove it to you
Don't fill my world with rain
You know your tears
Would only bring pain in my heart

Eight-oh-five
I guess you're leaving...goodbye

Overall Meaning

The song "8:05" by Moby Grape is a heart-wrenching plea from the singer to their lover not to leave them. The title of the song comes from the time of day that the singer realizes their partner is leaving, and they express their desperation and hopelessness without their loved one. The lyrics express how much they love their partner and how wonderful it would be to keep them with them, but they know it's useless to try without their partner's reciprocation. They offer up their heart as all they have to give and beg their partner to change their mind before they lose all their sunshine. The singer pleads with their lover, asking them to understand their feelings and not to fill their world with rain by leaving. They express how their tears would only bring pain to their heart.

The use of time in the title of the song and throughout the lyrics creates a sense of urgency and finality. The repetitive questioning of whether their partner will change their mind shows the desperation of the singer's plight. The use of natural imagery, such as sunshine and rain, enhances the emotional depth of the song.

Luscious layers of gorgeous harmony, and those guitar parts are just woven in so nice. I saw this excellent band many times, live, at the Fillmore and Winterland in the summer of 1967. Nothing like them before or since. And they could perform this tight, this focused, in live performance in a way that many other bands could not. They truly thought out of the same musical sense. They made an enormous contribution to music in spite of their difficulties. They opened the door for other bands to explore blended sounds, beyond categories. Thank you.

I was playing music in Reno and used to hear this one on KSAN in San Francisco. I haven't heard it since 1975. Now I'm happy!
