Codeine
Trampled by Turtles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, I ain't your baby, I ain't your baby now
Them holy rollers got kicked right out of town
It's dark where I've been stayin'
Don't you worry, come on in
Well, I've finally found a friend
I've found a friend

Codeine, Codeine
You're the nicest thing I've seen
For a while, for a while

Well you hold my hand as I step into the room
And all these people, they'll all be fading soon
Well, it's whisper time remembered
Through armored thorns and knives
And it's all that I've got left
To hold onto

Codeine, codeine
You're the nicest thing I've seen
For a while, for a while

Well you can keep your dusty bottle on your shelf
You can keep your words of wisdom to yourself
I love you darling so
Why can't you let me go
Before you find me hanging in my cell

Codeine, codeine
You're the nicest thing I've seen
For a while, for a while

Codeine, Codeine
You're the nicest thing I've seen
For a while, for a while

Overall Meaning

The song "Codeine" by Trampled By Turtles tells the story of a person who has hit rock bottom and found comfort in the use of drugs, particularly codeine. The first verse implies a rejection of a religious community, as they were kicked out of town by holy rollers. The singer took refuge in a dark place, where they found a friend in codeine. The chorus repeats the line "Codeine, Codeine, You're the nicest thing I've seen for a while" which highlights the emotional solace provided by the drug.

The second verse depicts the singer as they are about to take codeine and all these people around them will soon fade away, indicating a preference for the perceived reality that comes with drug use. At this point, the singer relies on drug use to remember good times, even as they have to face difficult experiences such as thorns and knives. The chorus repeats, emphasizing the growing dependence on codeine for emotional support.

The final verse shifts from an appreciation for codeine to a sense of danger that comes with overindulgence. The singer indicates love for someone who doesn't return the affection and seems to suggest a desire to end life if things don't change. The chorus repeats for the final time, emphasizing codeine's ability to provide short-term relief from pain and sorrow, but ultimately bringing about the danger of addiction and death.

Overall, the lyrics of "Codeine" present a bleak picture of the intersection of drug use and vulnerability. While codeine provides a temporary sense of comfort and joy, it ultimately brings about despair and hopelessness.

This song hits a very deep raw nerve for me. I have been off of it for about three years now. When ever I feel the urge, I listen to this song, and am reminded of the reasons why I quit in the first place. In the end, I was just putting a bandaid on a chain saw wound, and not getting the stitches I needed to become whole again. I know the band will probably never see this, but I would like to say thank you to them for throwing this issue into the spotlight. I need to remind myself every now and again that it isn't worth it. This song does that for me.

They perhaps are the greatest live show going.

Metalheads hanging out with bluegrass grandmothers.

No one knows what's going on......But it's awesome.

Couldn’t agree more!!!!!

Can’t wait for the Red Rocks Amphitheater show in July!!
Their headlining a onetime concert with The Dead South & Deer Tick both opening & accompanying Trampled by Turtles
It’s gonna be one of the best live shows of their careers!!

Cheers.

@idontwantahandlethough

lol That sounds so sick! I spend a lot of time in Delut (I live in MN), so I really gotta get around to going to one of their gigs!
