El Mañana
Gorillaz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Summer don't know me no more
He got mad, tiresome
Summer don't know me
He'd just let me low in myself
'Cause I do know love
From you then
Just dying

I saw that day
Lost my mind
Lord, I'm fine
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

Don't stop the bud when it comes
It's the dawn, you'll see
Money won't get there
Ten years passed tonight
You'll flee
If you do that
I'll be sworn
To find you

I saw that day
Lost my mind
Lord, I'm fine
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

I saw that day
Lost my mind
Lord, I'm fine
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Gorillaz's El Mañana are shrouded in mystery and open to interpretation, as is often the case with the band's music. On the surface, it seems to be a lament about a failed relationship with someone who "Summer" no longer recognizes. The singer feels low and lost, having been abandoned by this person who once knew them and loved them. They hold onto the hope that maybe one day, this person will return to them and they can be together again.

However, there is also an ominous tone to the lyrics, with phrases such as "Lost my mind" and "Money won't get there." It's possible that the song is about something deeper than just a break-up, perhaps dealing with themes of mental illness or substance abuse. The line "Don't stop the bud when it comes" could be interpreted as a reference to marijuana, or it could simply refer to not stopping something good from happening when it appears.

He's gone now. That brother of mine. He's buried with this album, Demon Days, it's clutched in his hand. A final gift from the family as he was taken before his time.

Everyday we want to see him come back. Everyday we hum this tune to ourselves as it feels so much like the end of a good thing.

The Gorillaz brought out a facet of my brother that was buried. Long would it have been unseen if not for this work. It brought us joy while we listened. We watched the videos in awe as they came out.

He loved this album. We loved him. We listen to the music as a reminder. We hope he hears it too. We hope he's listening with us where ever he may be.

Never forget that in terms of story this depressing ass song was written by a 15 year Japanese girl (Who first showed up in a Fedex box) while fighting zombies.
