Das Lied Der Deutschen
Nico Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
Über alles in der Welt,
Wenn es stets zu Schutz und Trutze
Brüderlich zusammenhält.
Von der Maas bis an die Memel,
Von der Etsch bis an den Belt,

Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
Über alles in der Welt!

Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang
Sollen in der Welt behalten
Ihren alten schönen Klang,
Uns zu edler Tat begeistern
Unser ganzes Leben lang.

Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang!

Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
Für das deutsche Vaterland!
Danach lasst uns alle streben
Brüderlich mit Herz und Hand!
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
Sind des Glückes Unterpfand;

Blüh' im Glanze dieses Glückes,
Blühe, deutsches Vaterland.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Nico's song "Das Lied Der Deutschen" talk about Germany and its pride in its country, culture, and people. It emphasizes the importance of unity and brotherhood in defending the country and praises the beauty of German women, their loyalty, and the richness of German wine and song. The song calls for unity, law, and freedom for the German homeland and encourages its people to strive for these ideals with all their hearts and hands. The final verse celebrates the potential for Germany to flourish in happiness and glory with these values in place.

While the song has been interpreted as a patriotic anthem, it has also been a source of controversy due to its association with Nazi Germany. The first two verses of the song were adopted as the national anthem in 1922, but were later banned after World War II due to their association with the Nazi regime.

It sounds so weird and unexpected coming from Nico. Amazing. And somehow spooky or creepy at the same time.

I swear i can see ranks of Prussian soldiers rising from the mouldy earth, in response to this gloriously sepulchral music.

A German friend once pointed out the irony of this anthem being sung by a solitary (in both senses of the word) voice. Typically, it would have been sung by a whole mob of people (in both senses of the word).

How is that irony?
