Song for Zula
Phosphorescent Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That it makes a fiery ring
Oh, but I know love as a fading thing
Just as fickle as a feather in a stream
See, honey, I saw love
You see it came to me
It put its face up to my face so I could see
Yeah, then I saw love disfigure me
Into something I am not recognizing
See the cage, it called, I said, "Come on in"
I will not open myself up this way again
And lay my face to the soil, and all my teeth to the sand
I will not lay like this for days now upon end
You will not see me fall, nor see me struggle to stand
To be acknowledged by some touch from his gnarled hands
You see the cage it called, I said, "Come on in"
I will not open myself this way again
You see the moon is bright in that treetop night
I see the shadows that we cast in the cold clean light
Now my feet are gold and my heart is white
And we race out on the desert plains all night
See, honey, I am not some broken thing
I do not lay in the dark waiting for thee
Now my heart is gold, my feet are light
And I'm racing out on the desert plains all night
So some say love is a burning thing
That it makes a fiery ring
Oh, but I know love as a caging thing
Just a killer come to call from some awful dream
Ah, and all you folks, you come to see
You just stand there in the glass looking at me
But my heart is wild, and my bones are steel
And I could kill you with my bare hands if I was free
The song "Song for Zula" by Phosphorescent is a melancholic ballad that touches upon the subject of love, and how it can both transform and cage a person. The song has a poetic quality to its lyrics, and singer/songwriter Matthew Houck delivers them with emotional rawness. The opening lines, "Some say love is a burning thing, that it makes a fiery ring", sets up the traditional romantic notion of love as something passionate and intense. But the following lines, "Oh, but I know love as a fading thing, just as fickle as a feather in a stream", contrasts with the first two, suggesting that love is not a constant force, but something that ebbs and flows.
As the song progresses, the singer describes how love disfigured him, and how he avoids falling into its trap again. The lines "See the cage, it called, I said, 'Come on in'/I will not open myself up this way again" suggest that he has been hurt by love before, and is now wary of opening himself up to it again. The imagery of the "cage" also highlights the idea of love as a trapping force. However, towards the end of the song, there is a shift in tone, as the singer declares that he is not a broken thing and that his heart is now "gold". He also describes himself as being wild and strong, with "bones of steel", which contrasts with the vulnerability expressed earlier in the song.
Overall, "Song for Zula" is a powerful exploration of the complexities of love, and how it can both transform and cage a person. The lyrics are poetic and emotionally charged, and the song is executed with soulful intensity.

My daughter who died by suicide in 2015 recommended this to me in an old email. I am revisiting old emails as a cathartic. She died at 33, my only child. We shared a love of music that moved us deeply, not necessarily the radios top 10 favs. I miss her. I feel her in the depth of this recommended great deeply moving song. I love it. Thank you!
