Under My Skin
Jukebox the Ghost Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How much can you fit under your skin?
How much can you fit under your skin?
I wish you were dead babe I wish you were dead
I can fit two, I can fit two...

I can fit two people under my skin
Yea I can fit two people under my skin
And I will prove it if you will listen
You crawl up in there and join me within

I can feel your heart beating under my skin
And the beating of your heart is making me bleed from within
And if we cut open your heart, pour it in a cup
Do you think it'd be enough, do you think it'd be enough
To fill... my heart with music?

Oh no, not a chance in hell
Yeah I've heard you sing but it ain't too well
Heart melts, yeah you meant so well
But your song's no good round here

I can feel you breathing under my skin
I can feel you breathing under my skin
And each breath you take is a brand new begin
Each breath you take, brand new begin..ing
(Eng)land has a way of getting under my skin
And my family has a way of getting under my skin
And my family had a castle way back when
I would have lived there if they had more male children
To fill... my heart with music

Oh no, not a chance in hell
Yeah I've heard you sing but it ain't too well
Heart melts, yeah you meant so well
But your song's no good round here
Oh no, not a chance in hell
Yeah I've heard you sing but it ain't too well
Heart melts, yeah you meant so well
But your song's no good round...heeere no no no no!

I don't think there is anyone under your skin
Like a Cheshire cat I think that you are just a grin
And I can feel you laughing, under my skin
And the happy palpitations are making me... grin.

You know it fills my heart with music...
-Oh no, not a chance in hell
Yeah I've heard you sing but it ain't too well
Heart melts, yeah you meant so well
But your song's no good round here
- Oh no, not a chance in hell
Yeah I've heard you sing but it ain't too well
Heart melts, yeah you meant so well
But your song's no good round heeere no no no no!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Under My Skin" by Jukebox the Ghost might be interpreted in different ways, but one could argue that they mainly depict a complex relationship where one person wishes the other were dead but, at the same time, feels deeply connected and influenced by them. The chorus repeats the question, "How much can you fit under your skin?" as a rhetorical device to highlight the intensity of the feelings the singer (presumably the lead singer) has for the person they are addressing. The first verse mentions fitting "two people under my skin," which could represent the idea of being so close to someone that they become a part of your identity or even your soul. However, the subsequent lines "I wish you were dead babe I wish you were dead / I can fit two, I can fit two" might suggest that the relationship is fraught with conflict, and the singer is unable to decide if they want to embrace or reject the other person.

The second verse contains two additional references to things getting under the singer's skin: England and their family's past. While England might be a metaphor for a feeling of displacement, nostalgia, or belonging to a culture one wasn't born into, the castle and male children allusion could imply a sense of inadequacy or rejection within one's family. The final section of the lyrics seems to acknowledge the paradoxical nature of love and hate and the possibility of finding joy in the maddening presence of someone we can't help but love. The back-and-forth between the singer and the unnamed person continues until the last lines, where the singer seems to yield to the gleefulness they feel by admitting that the happiness they share fills their heart with music.

@imalittlelady

INTERPRETATION:- my family has a way of getting under my skin & if they had more male children makes me believe this guy’s family ‘didn’t like’ boys and so when the mom bore a boy they always made him feel not exactly neglected but not particularly loved either (which rlyyy gives u the scratchy feeling under ur skin) also combined with England has a way of getting under my skin gives me real alienating vibes like the alienation feeling from his family grew till he felt alienated to his whole country.

he never liked that scratchy feeling. he wanted to feel loved and welcomed not just an outsider everyone tolerates. Until one day he befriended a girl who treated him lovingly with care and a warm smile and made him feel like he’s a real person and he fell in love with her.

however she turns out to love another guy(I’ll mention why I think that later on). Thus the love he longed for to free him from the “never being enough” feeling, became the new reason for that same exact feeling and the scratchy under his skin once more. Which basically made him Insane . The lines I can feel ur heart beating under my skin & I can hear ur breathing under my skin all hint to that

they also hint to how anger slowly grew in his head as well. I wish u were dead, babe cuz he’d rather stick with the old scratchy feeling than this new stronger scratch under his skin cuz of his unrequited-love for her. Thus wishing she was long dead and not ‘tormenting’ him.

at some point he can’t take it anymore and demands her to say she loves him, which’s referred to in the lyrics as ‘singing’. and when she refuses he says I heard u sing but it ain’t too well and the lines you meant so well, but ur song’s no good ‘round here he acknowledges she doesn’t mean harm by saying that and she’s just being honest with him, but he doesn’t care about her answer anymore and she’s his whether she liked it or not.

She keeps rejecting him which leads him to a frenzy in which he peels her skin to show her that “you see?! That “guy” u like ISN’T under ur skin! meaning that u don’t love him at all!!” hence the line I don’t think there’s anyone under ur skin

the in his desperation he cuts her heart and pours it in a cup and drinks hoping it’s enough to finally “harness” her love. if we cut ur heart and pour it in a cup, do u think it would be enough? However now he’s all alone again with only her corpse beside him. He imagines her laughing (either cuz he believes after drinking her blood that she’d be always within him forever, or laughing at how pathetic he is now) I can feel u laughing under my skin .

and happy palpitations it makes me grin either implies he’s happy with this illusion/belief of her heartbeat under his skin and that she’s always with him, or it implies he agrees with her that he’s pathetic and now he completely lost everything including his own mind.
and that’s it I guess…

Guy who's only listened to Tally Hall, listening to any indie music: getting a lot of Tally Hall vibes here

@Linmints

actually though,, everyone in the comments is just like "omg insert indie artist they like vibes"

@DonRay.

At least it's not TikTok obsessed white girls saying "this is such a Scorpio song" or making shitty slowed + reverb songs

@Boppercat

Yeah, a lot of indie musicians kinda sound similar.
People think it sounds like tally hall, mother mother, will wood and lemon demon.
Honestly, I’m sure there were other musicians people were talking about but that’s what I find most.

@L0rdOfThePies

Honestly i cannot hear tally hall or lemon demon in this at all, i did think it was an autoheart song though.. also w ena pfp

@jaybirdgeorge
