The UK had a very vivid scene regarding record stores, as did many other countries and cities.

One unique aspect though was that they were at the cross roads of sorts in regards to some technologies and styles.

To the east they had the Berlin scene and bands like Kraftwerk. And all of the countries that had second hand records.

To the south they had alot of afro funk emerging in record shops.

To the west, they had the american scene of electronic, dj centric vinyl skills and even hiphop music. The repurposing of samplers and 808's and 909's and 303's eventually found their way from america across the pond.

From the Carribean islands and specifically Jamaica, there was alot of dancehall, ska a d reggae style vinyl being pressed in the UK and then sold in the UK (and jamaica). With the advent of the cassette tape, that aspect sped up dramatically.

And the immigrants that arrived in the UK and the second generation immigrants...modified the uk sound heavily.

Something like that. Yet that is only like 1% of the story.

This is 24 years old and it still doesn't feel dated.

@necromax13

Ben Smith the snare sample makes it sound a bit too much like ska IMO, so, it's the only part that shows its age.

@augustcelineiii946

@Victor the Kid I don't think so. Sounds like D&B snare commonly used among artists today.

@necromax13

@August Celine III no, the drum kit is distinctly 90s, as opposed to the "amen break" which is the drum kit dnb artists have been using since forever.

@hydrodwarf

Born 2 generations ahead of his time

@PedroTheChiknNuggitFan

A fucking masterpiece, heard this 8 years ago and it changed my life, left classical music school and devoted entirely to electronic music and sound design.

There is a video of Beep Street on YouTube, a clip driving around in Tokyo. The perfect match between audio and video.

@snoutysnouterson

What a legend, living life your way.

@kkngd391

What about it changed you?
