Cellophane
FKA twigs Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Why don't I do it for you?
Why won't you do it for me?
When all I do is for you?
They want to see us, want to see us alone
They want to see us, want to see us apart
They want to see us, want to see us alone
They want to see us, want to see us apart
And I, just want to feel you're there
And I don't want to have to share our love
I try, but I get overwhelmed
When you're gone I have no one to tell
And I, just want to feel you're there
And I don't want to have to share our love
I try but I get overwhelmed
All wrapped in cellophane, the feelings that we had
And didn't I do it for you?
Why don't I do it for you?
Why won't you do it for me?
When all I do is for you?
And didn't I do it for you?
Why won't I do it for you?
Why won't you do it for me?
When all I do is for you?
But I, just want to feel you're there
And I don't want to have to share our love
I try but I get overwhelmed
When you're gone, I have no one to tell
They're waiting
They're watching
They're watching us
They're hating
They're waiting
And hoping
I'm not enough
The lyrics of FKA twigs’s song "Cellophane" express the longing for a deep, emotional connection in a relationship, and the fear of losing that. The opening lines of the verse, "Didn't I do it for you? Why don't I do it for you? Why won't you do it for me? When all I do is for you?" suggest a sense of frustration and confusion for someone who feels that all their efforts in a relationship are not being reciprocated. The repetition of this refrain throughout the song emphasizes the emotional weight of this unrequited effort, and the desperation to be seen and acknowledged.
The chorus emphasizes the fear of losing the connection: "They want to see us, want to see us alone. They want to see us, want to see us apart." This fear is heightened by the repetition of this line, building up the tension and the sense that the world is against their relationship. The singer of the song voices the desire to feel the presence of their partner and not to have to share their love with anyone. The line "All wrapped in cellophane, the feelings that we had" suggests that there is something fragile about the relationship, something that can easily be broken or hidden away.
The bridge of the song, "They're waiting, they're watching, they're watching us. They're hating, they're waiting and hoping I'm not enough" suggests an external pressure dictating the fate of the relationship. The fear of judgment and criticism from others seems to weigh heavily on the singer, leading to a sense of insecurity and self-doubt.
Overall, "Cellophane" expresses the longing for a deep emotional connection and the fear of losing it to external pressure. The repetition of the refrain emphasizes the weight of the singer's unreciprocated efforts, while the chorus highlights the fear of losing the connection. The bridge points towards an external pressure dictating the fate of the relationship and emphasizes the sense of insecurity that results from that.

I listened to that heel scrape like twelve times. The sharp, gliding sound coming to an abrupt stop creates a sense of precision in-and-of-itself, but it also brings to mind figure-skating and the mastery of an art form through the mastery of the body. Didn't mean for that to sound so pretentious, but I think you probably know what I mean.
