Soylent Green
:Wumpscut: Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Welcome to the worlds of dreams
Where people have to satisfy the need to sell their means

Don't look back in anger
You're not the only one
To choke on all this madness
Cause all you get is none
All you get is none
All you get is none
Don't look back in anger
You´re not the only one

Live for, die for
The substance of your life
You cannot chain your misery
Just seal it in your life
Moving in circles, the anger emanates
The madness all around you
The healing hands of Fate ?

Soylent!
This is right.
This is the truth you prayed for
This is the fruit you die for
Can't get away
Can't get away
Can't get away

"Rindfleisch, miss shirl"
"Haben Sie ein Solches stück schon mal gesehn?"
"Wie oft kann ich denn schon einmal meiner Kundschaft etwas anbieten, was derart Phantastisch ist?"
"Nun ist es also soweit"
"Richtig ist es nicht doch, notwendig"
"Für Gott"
"Für Gott"
"Für Gott"
"Für Gott"
"Für Gott"
"Geh mit Gott"

Run!
Soylent Green
Soylent, this is the way to resurrect
The hope, the fear
The bodies are littered

God and religion,
Religious in vain
Religious in vain
Religious in vain
God is Religion, religious imprisonment!

Run!

"Gott möge uns schützen"
"Soylent grün ist Menschenfleisch!"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Wumpscut's song Soylent Green depict a dystopian world where people are forced to sell their means to survive. The first stanza talks about the world of dreams, where people have to satisfy the need to sell their means to survive. The second stanza advises not to look back in anger, as everyone chokes on the madness that surrounds them. The healing hands of fate are sought to ease the anger and the madness surrounding people. The chorus then mentions Soylent, a food source that is presented as the truth people have prayed for, and the fruit that they must die for. The repeated line "Can't get away" emphasizes the helplessness of people trapped in this vicious cycle.

The following stanzas describe the religious angle to the story, where God and religion are portrayed as useless tools in the face of such dystopia. The later stanza mentions how the oceans are empty, and people are growing humans for food. The lyrics then reach a peak where a character reveals that Soylent green is made from human flesh. The repeated line "Run!" at the end is a final cry to escape from this grim situation.

@Sigfrank I'm not exactly sure what you might be referring to exactly, unless it involves technology? I've grown up in Silicon Valley.

I'm not angry at you, so please don't think this is directed at you, personally -- it's just some personal history.

It's common for most people to believe the "Technological Renaissance" happened in San Francisco; because, it was the mass-media who made the association. Silicon Valley "proper" is in Mountain View -- Santa Clara County, where the nearest largest city is San Jose. When tech-moguls fly into Silicon Valley (including the President of the United Stated) they enter San Jose. The media screwed things up, all the time by saying San Francisco is the heart of Silicon Valley -- That's a misconception.

When, the Loma Prieta earthquake happened in 1989, Silicon Valley was devastated. It was the most terrible earthquake, I had ever experienced. Media outlets set-up camp in San Francisco, repeating that the earthquake happened in San Francisco as "Silicon Valley" but, they wanted the World News to associate the earthquake with San Francisco instead of Santa Cruz.

In 89' a news anchor named Brian Gumbel came from New York, said Silicon Valley was an "uncivilized territory" asking "How difficult is it to get, hot 'crescent rolls' with my cappuccino in the morning?" Within a 150 miles radius, everything was in devastation by homes that collapsed onto entire families -- still alive waiting to be rescued, uncontrollable fires, no electricity, no water, no telephone, no gas stations, no fresh food !!! We all said that Brian Gumbel was an idiot to expect "hot crescents with jelly" when the region was devastated.

Silicon Valley is my home, because it's still "the beating heart" of technology today and I've seen technology "rise" and "fall". I've been very fortunate to be invited into semi-secret facilities, like the "IBM Almaden Research Center" facility where, you're greeted by numerous military guards holding AK-47's, several "full-body scans" both to enter and exit, bullet-proof and bomb-proof buildings and the first words uttered by the facility manager is:

"Right now, there are 8 nuclear warheads aimed directly at this facility -- Alone... !!!"

San Francisco is apart of the technology industry, but North of it, is the "real" Silicon Valley.

' No tuna or bread was found in the tuna sandwich in Subway restaurants.

This song made me love the sound of organs like crazy (no it's not a wordplay). Nothing better in the world than the sound of a massive organ freshly out of the synthesizer. Well, besides the sound of churchbells.

@sashawrite4054

The year was 2000...I was 13...I logged onto my dad's dial up computer. Played games in ms dos...listened to techo...longed to be a raver...painted for fun in ms paint. The times have flown by.

@spinglasshydra

I was Goth when I was 12, but I was always accused of being a Raver. I was also 20 years old when this happened; that's exactly, why I remember MS Dos, so nostalgic.

Remember to never enter -- "del *.*"

@riot_of_flowers725

See...I love hearing about things like this. Its always so fascinating to me. People roughly into the same things, nearly worlds apart, only revolving their lives around those things in different ways. For instance, during the year 2000, I was 20 years old, dancing my ass off to this, on a Tuesday night at the local goth/industrial club, going hard until 2 in the morning, wondering what accursed narcotic was going to keep me awake at work, 5 hours later. Yeah...that candle burned bright as hell. Luckily it burned out pretty fast, because that was a hell of a momentum to keep up. Haha. And you're right about the time thing. It legit feels like yesterday...ya know?

@spinglasshydra

@Riot_of_Flowers You've got Mirai Nikki on your playlist - I respect that. I use to go to "Kontrol Factory" in old Hollywood. I had university classes at 8 the morning, so I'd show up and my buddies would say, "Dude, you're still 'f*cked up' "; but yes, it was a fun time.

@Spin'glass Hydra: San Francisco was where it was at.
