The band, and especially its leader, Shnurov, has long been famous for its catchy beats and irrepressibly bad language, somehow managing to be one of the top bands in Russia despite almost never being clean enough to earn radio play and despite its live concerts being banned in Moscow.
In 2008 Leningrad disbanded. Its former members run Рубль and Spitfire. The band reunited in 2010.

The lyrics of this song by Ленинград, 'Никулин', is a commentary on the rampant drug culture in society. The first verse characterizes the trendy new drug user as someone who is into 'гидропон', 'шала', 'бошки' or 'гаш', all slang terms for various drugs. There is an abundance of drugs around and the song urges people to listen to the wisdom of Yuri Nikulin. The chorus entreats the listener to 'postoj parovoz' – stop the train, and 'podlechi' – heal yourself from addiction.
The second verse talks about police officers who 'pasyat' – shepherd – drug addicts, and how everybody is smoking 'vse i kurjat vse' – every drug that there is. The word 'učastkovyj', which means local police officer in Russian, is used here ironically to suggest that they are actually profiting from drug dealers. The song then talks about how only those who have found a port for themselves, and who have healed themselves and abstained from drugs, can escape the 'zamok i puly' – prison cell and bullets – and live a life as exhorted by the great Yuri Nikulin.
The song is a rebellious, satirical take on the drug users and those who enable their habits, and urges listeners to stop the train that leads to the path of addiction.
