This song always brought a lump to my throat. Toots is truly a legend. His harmonica playing is unmatched(followed closely by Stevie). It's no wonder why Quincy used him on so many of his albums throughout the 70's up until "Juke Joint". Another great Toots performance on a Quincy album would be "Buesette" from 1975's Mellow Madness. The song was a remake of a Toots original composition and recording from the 60's.

Velas is by far my favorite Smooth Jazz song. Always has been. So relaxing. Toots, we miss you!!! What a collaboration.....Toots and the "Q" man, one of the greatest producers of our time!! Still get goosebumps listening to that song after all these years!! Priceless and timeless!!!

RIP to a great Composer - Mr. Johnny Mandel- who got a much-deserved Grammy for best arrangement for this song off one of the greatest albums ever laid to wax- Q's " The Dude". Such great music JM created over his long career & thankfully the music lives on.

This classic tune brings me back to a time in n.y. as a kid running the streets with friends... our parents just setting a great vibe as we finished dinner. This tune could play @ any time of the year... it really doesnt matter... for some strange reasons it always has a way of making me feel safe as my mind drifts to my youthful days. The entire album was the bomb.

Nostalgic for me this tune, such a cool jazz number that brings me back to one of the fondest days of my life back in College. Thanks to the insightful listeners. I listened to the version by Ivan Lin (the Brazilian pianist) I loved it. Being a medical doctor who plays jazz piano as a hobby, I appreciate the other version more. However, they are both dynamic versions!

I remember one night when I was in college, I couldn't sleep. I was up all night and to pass the time, I wrote my girl (now my wife) a poem. I finished it just as the sun was rising and I had this song on repeat the entire time. Quincy and Toots made a lot of good music together. Check out "Brown Ballad" from Quincy's "Smackwater Jack" album.

Hadn't heard this since I bought the album back when it was first released. Loved it then but very recently, I heard Dave Grusin performing it live to my recognition which reminded me of this version. I went crazy trying to find it with recalling the title. Now I hope I can try to perform it. Love this tune!

Yes it is! It's the Belgian harmonica-player Toots Thielemans. He's over 80 years old now. He's on the Wiz as well and he's a very close friend to Quincy Jones.

I was just a 20yr. old kid when this song came out. I was really into funk, from Rick James to Parliment/Funkedelic,. Then on a cold, winter Chicago night in Jan. 1982, I made love to the most beautiful 32yr. old woman I had ever seen to this song. Needless to say, I've been a smooth jazz lover every since. Thanx for posting this song man, it brings back some wonderful memories.

Not taking out any credit whatsoever from master Q, but this song was composed by my Brazilian compatriots, Ivan Lins and Vitor Martins, and Jones made his version with the incredible Jean "Toots" Thielemans. An excellent song, I must say. One of the best in Quincy's career.

Here in Chicago, back in tha day, one of the DJs from one of the major R&B stations would play this music during his show. He used it mostly in the background in between songs, while making an announcement, reading the weather forecast or right before his went to commercial.
Listening to it right now brings back memories of my last years in high school and my first years in college.
