She attempted suicide in July 1989 in her then-boyfriend 近藤真彦 (Masahiko Kondo)'s apartment after discovering that 松田聖子 (Seiko Matsuda), her main competition, and her boyfriend were having an affair together. Afterward, she disappeared from the public eye and is rumored to have spent her days drinking heavily in Hawaii. Her career since her suicide attempt has never regained the popularity she experienced in the early- to mid-1980s. But she kept performing even after 1996. Her performances before Japanese audiences continue to be of high quality. Her 2000, 2002 and 2003 concerts attracted large numbers of fans. She still performs and releases original songs (as of 2005). She is also on the New Year’s TV show Kōhaku Uta Gassen.

These lyrics can be interpreted as a reflection of the artist's emotional state and the sense of loss that she is experiencing. The first line, "何を聴いていても" (Nani wo kiite ite mo), translates to "No matter what I listen to." This suggests that no matter what kind of music or sound she hears, it all sounds sad to her. This could imply a deep sense of melancholy and a feeling of being unable to escape a sad emotional state.
The following line, "悲しく聴こえる" (Kanashiku kikoeru), translates to "It sounds sadly." This line reinforces the idea that the artist is perceiving everything around her in a sorrowful manner. It highlights her sensitivity to the emotional tone of her surroundings and implies a heightened awareness of sadness.
The next line, "光を失った" (Hikari wo ushinatta), translates to "Lost the light." This could be interpreted metaphorically, suggesting that the artist has lost a sense of hope or positivity in her life. It could also signify the loss of a person who brought light into her life. The loss of light symbolizes a sense of darkness or emptiness.
The final two lines, "鏡の前に立ち 花びらのこして 部屋を出ていく" (Kagami no mae ni tachi hanabira no koshite heya wo dete iku), translate to "Standing in front of the mirror, leaving petals behind as I leave the room." This image of standing in front of a mirror could represent introspection and self-reflection. The line suggests that the artist is leaving behind a part of herself, represented by the petals, as she departs from the room. This could symbolize leaving behind her past or a certain aspect of her identity. It implies a sense of change and the potential for growth or a new beginning.
Overall, these lyrics convey a feeling of sadness, loss, and introspection. The artist seems to be grappling with deep emotions and a sense of disconnection from the world around her. Despite this, there is a glimmer of hope in the possibility of leaving the room and starting anew.
