Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The lyrics of the song "青い月夜だ" or "Aoi Tsukiyo da" by 春日八郎 is about a sailor who is unable to let go of the sea, and the memories associated with it. The first stanza talks about how he cannot leave without shedding all attachment and embracing his role as a sailor. The singer believes that he is destined to be a bird of the sea and cannot live on land; tomorrow he will be in a foreign port waiting for his one-night dreams to come true and to talk about them on the deck on a blue moonlit night.
The second stanza talks about nostalgia, where the singer's memories of his homeland's sky are vague and distant. He still yearns to go back home even though he knows it's not realistic. Occasionally, he still dreams and cries, holding the hidden pain in his heart that only comes to light. The third stanza talks about a melancholic memory of watching a girl in the rain from a beach, where the pain of his heart's wound feels alive. The singer relates to the girl in the sense that they both dream about something they can't have and how the pain of memories can hurt the soul.
