Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Newspaper

Downtown jazz club

Overall Meaning

(Naoko Kawai) reminisces about a past summer love that occurred on the now distant, yet unforgettable island of Coney Island. The lyrics depict a young woman who is deeply in love with someone special, and would follow him even when it was clear she was unwanted. The imagery of running on the beach to catch up with him is paralleled by the imagery of the boxing gym, where she laments not being able to win his affections despite her best efforts. The use of the sandbag as a metaphorical representation of her feelings towards this man is particularly poignant; she cannot resist hitting it, although she knows it will ultimately bring her pain.

As the song progresses, the chorus repeats the message that even if this man is out of her life and she cannot see him anymore, her love for him still burns inside her like a quiet flame. The pain of splitting up is compared to the sunset where the light fades beyond the horizon. Despite the melancholic themes laced throughout the song, the singer reflects on how beautiful even her weaknesses were. The vivid and nostalgic lyrics help to convey the intense emotions and memories that are attached to this romantic summer fling, forever etched in her mind.
