Thanatos
鷺巣詩郎 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now it′s time, I fear to tell
I've been holding it back so long
But something strange deep inside of me is happening
I feel unlike
I′ve ever felt
And it's makin' me scared
That I may not be what I(think I am)
What of us, what do I say
Are we both from a different world
Cos every breath that I take, I breathe it for you
I couldn′t face my life without you
And I′m so afraid. There's nothing to comfort us
What am I, if I can′t be yours
I don't sleep, don′t feel a thing
And my senses have all but gone
Can't even cry from the pain, can′t shed a tear now
I realise
We're not the same
And it's makin′ me sad
Cos we can′t fullfill our dream(in the life)
So I must, let us break free
I can never be what you need
If there was a way, through the hurt
Then I would find it
I'd take the blows.Yes I would fight it

But this is the one.Impossible dream to live
What am I, if I can′t be yours.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Thanatos" by 鷺巣詩郎 reflects the inner turmoil of the singer who is struggling to come to terms with his true identity. He starts by admitting that he has been concealing his feelings for too long and something strange is happening deep inside him. He is scared to come to terms with who he really is and might not be who he thinks he is. The singer then wonders if he and his love interest are from a different world and if they are, then what does he say. He admits that every breath that he takes is for her and he can’t face life without her, but he is scared and there’s nothing to comfort them.

The singer is unable to sleep, feels nothing, and his senses have all but gone. He can’t even cry from the pain, and he realizes that they are not the same, and this realization is making him sad. He then acknowledges that they cannot fulfill their dream of being together, and he has to let them break free. He admits that he can never be what she needs, and if there was any way to get past the hurt, then he would find it, but he knows that this is an impossible dream to live. The singer asks what he is if he can’t be hers, and this is the primary question of his identity crisis.

just finished watching Evangelion all over again and also GTO... This nostalgia I feel is incredible. That moment when we discovered new worlds. And how they have joined us in our hearts and minds as we grow up. The perspective of watching this as a very young guy and now at my almost 34 years old is simply a big difference.

Evangelion, when the only thing you cared about as shonnen genre fan was the fights and the connection between Shinji and Rei. Now I understand way more things on the side of the characters, the story, the music and the amazing animation from back then. And the message is incredible.

GTO was just the type of man you wanted to become. Honest and caring for others. Today I hope i have done a good job. Been a good man. Sharing and helping as much as I can with those who need it. But overall... keeping any promise I make. Been truthful to myself and reliable for others no matter what.

I look around me and I see a world divided, where generations are defined by nonsense. Where race, politics, religion and other mindless stuff domain us and conquer us in a way that we stop thinking on our own and let us drown in foolishness.

Where are those thumbnails of silly animals and fail army compilations? those thumbnails of UFOs or ghosts compilations. Those bad quality videos that lasted like 13 seconds just to make you laugh. Or those long as videos of a guy/girl making parkour.

Whoever you are. If you are reading this. Just so you know, don't give up on what you want to do. Don't silence your thoughts but overall... be yourself. Don't try to belong. You don't need that. Feel the joy of been sad, happy, angry,... at the end, that is what makes us humans.

Stay safe everyone.
