Putting Holes In Happiness
Marilyn Manson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The sky was blond like her
It was a day to take the child
Out back and shoot it.
I could have buried all my dead
Up in her cemetery head
She had dirty word witchcraft
I was in the deep end of her skin.
Then, it seemed like a one car car wreck
But I knew it was a horrid tragedy.
Ways to make the tiny satisfaction disappear.

Blow out the candles
On all my Frankensteins.
At least my death wish will come true.
You taste like Valentine's and
We cry,
You're like a birthday.
I should have picked the photograph
It lasted longer than you.

Putting holes in happiness.
We'll paint the future black
If it needs any color.
My death sentence is a story
Who'll be digging when you finally let me die?
The romance of our assassination
If you're Bonnie, I'll be your Clyde.
But the grass is greener here and
I can see all of your snakes.
You wear your ruins well
Please run away with me to hell.

Blow out the candles
On all my Frankensteins.
At least my death wish will come true.
You taste like Valentine's and
We cry,
You're like a birthday.

I should have picked the photograph
It lasted longer than you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Marilyn Manson's song "Putting Holes In Happiness" are dark and melancholic, reflecting the artist's experiences with heartbreak and desperation. The opening lines suggest a desire to escape reality, with the singer contemplating a terrible act of violence. He seems to be in thrall to a woman who embodies everything he desires, but who also draws him into dangerous places. The sense of tragedy in the song builds as Manson describes how the singer's attempts to find happiness are doomed to failure. He seems to be longing for something that cannot exist, and is left with only memories and regrets.

Throughout the lyrics, Manson uses vivid imagery and metaphors to convey the singer's state of mind. The candles that are blown out on "all my Frankensteins" suggest a wish for death and an escape from the horrors of life. The reference to Bonnie and Clyde symbolizes the idea of a doomed romance that is both thrilling and destructive. The repeated refrain about Valentine's Day and birthdays suggests a sense of nostalgia and loss, as the singer longs for a past that is no longer attainable.

Overall, "Putting Holes In Happiness" is a haunting and emotionally resonant song that explores some of the darkest aspects of human experience. The lyrics reflect Manson's unique perspective on the world and his ability to capture complex emotions in a few simple phrases.

Mutilation Is The Most Sincere Form Of Flattery

Are all great songs too, even if in my opinion and of many MM fans this album is far from Manson best.

But terrible or bad this album isn't, is average to good IMO.
