Based in the UK, the two musicians set out to create a multimedia project that would encompass a CD, DVD and cinematic presentation that would offer a complete artistic statement. The project offers music, digital video footage shot over the course of six months by Catto and Bridgeman, images, rhythms and spoken word content.
The first project features contributions from Dennis Hopper, Kurt Vonnegut, Michael Stipe, Robbie Williams, Tim Robbins, Brian Eno, Baaba Maal, Speech, Asha Bhosle, Neneh Cherry, Anita Roddick, Michael Franti and other artists and authors.
The band's theme for the project is "Unity Through Diversity".
1 Giant Leap's "My Culture" video, featuring Robbie Williams and Maxi Jazz from Faithless has received extensive airplay.
After nearly four years the new 1 Giant Leap project, currently titled 'What About Me' has been handed over by Duncan Bridgeman and Jamie Catto. Twelve films and twleve tracks about "...all the different ways we're mad...desperate, obsessed, neurotic, fixated...the insane ways we make ourselves unhappy..."
When Jamie Catto and Duncan Bridgeman joined forces to create the project 1 Giant Leap, they embarked upon a global journey that included Senegal, Ghana, South Africa, Uganda, India, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, America and Europe, equipped solely with a digital video camera, a laptop and a vision - to capture and weave together a unique fusion of sound, image and spoken word from some of the world's most happening musicians, authors, scientists and thinkers and to explore 'The Unity in the Diversity'.
Their treasure hunt brought many unexpected collaborations with such inspirations as Michael Stipe, Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Robbins, Dennis Hopper, Brian Eno, Asha Bhosle, and Baaba Maal. The resulting double-Grammy nominated DVD consists of 11 short films - INSPIRATION, MONEY, FAITH, SEX, DEATH, CONFRONTATION, TIME, BLASPHEMY, UNITY, MASKS, HAPPY, and 30 behind the scenes movies. You might have seen 'The Making Of 1 Giant Leap' which has been broadcast globally by National Geographic Channel. Or perhaps you've seen them playing live with their 10 piece band and cinema screens.

It is providing artificial friends
And relatives for lonely people
What it is is recurrent families
The same friends and relatives come back
Week after week after week after week
And they're wittier and they're better looking
And they're much more interesting and they're richer
Where is the love from birth
Where it's gone
Where is the love for humanity
Where it's gone
The love for the children
Respect for the elders
Where it's gone
Where it's gone
I wanna know
I wanna know
I wanna know
I wanna know
I wanna know
I wanna know
I wanna know
I wanna know
When will they get it right
And live in the light
Rest in the city
Grace for the nightfall
Rewash my memory
Turn climb my great wall
Peace don't desert me
Not in the forest
Grace where I trespass
Calling my goddess
This is not real
Here is not now
Why do you seek
All that is?
Where is the love from birth
Where it's gone
Where is the love for humanity
Where it's gone?
I wanna know
I wanna know
I wanna know
I wanna know
Tell me
I wanna know
I wanna know
I wanna know
Tell me
I wanna know
I wanna know
I wanna know
I wanna know
Dream my grandfather
Dream of great quiet
Barely a flash between
Words and blue silence
Gentle this hour
Wet is the highway
Brave are these cowards
Racing, racing, racing, racing away
Racing, racing, racing, racing away
Racing away
This is not real
The opening lines of the song “Racing Away” by 1 Giant Leap might come across as a harsh critique of modern society, particularly the way people turn to their TV screens as a substitute for real human connection. The song’s lyrics argue that television provides an illusion of connection through its portrayal of “artificial” friends and relatives who return week after week to entertain us, often with more wit, good looks, and wealth than real people in our lives. The repeated refrain “Where is the love from birth / Where it’s gone / Where is the love for humanity / Where it’s gone” echoes this critique, suggesting that our increasing reliance on technology and media has led us to neglect our basic human values and relationships.
However, the song also offers a glimmer of hope. The lines “Rest in the city / Grace for the nightfall / Rewash my memory / Turn climb my great wall” suggest a desire to find peace and meaning amidst the chaos of modern life. The dreamlike, meditative quality of the song intensifies as it progresses, culminating in the enigmatic closing lines: “Dream my grandfather / Dream of great quiet / Barely a flash between / Words and blue silence / Gentle this hour / Wet is the highway / Brave are these cowards / Racing, racing, racing, racing away.” These lines may be interpreted in various ways, but they hint at a longing for a deeper, more authentic connection between individuals and with the world itself.
