Fast Car
3 Elements Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Chorus
You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere (x2)

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Anyplace is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me myself I got nothing to prove

But is it fast enough so we can fly away? (x2)

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Anyplace is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me myself I got nothing to prove

You got a fast car
But is it fast enough so we can fly away
We gotta make a decision
We leave tonight or live and die this way

So remember we we're driving driving in your car
The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
And I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

Maybe together we could ride away

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together fly away

Maybe together fly away(x2)

Overall Meaning

The song "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman tells the story of a young couple who dreams of escaping their difficult lives and making something of themselves. The first lines of the chorus, "You got a fast car, I want a ticket to anywhere," set up the idea that the car symbolizes freedom - the opportunity to leave their struggles behind and begin a new life.

Throughout the song, the singer expresses a desire to work with her partner to create something better for themselves. They start from "zero" and have "nothing to lose," but they hope to "get somewhere" by partnering together. The speed and movement of the car are used as a metaphor for this idea of progress and escape, but even as they feel the rush of the wind in their hair, they still have to confront the realities of their situation. In the second verse, they must choose between staying in their current circumstances or taking a risk and leaving everything behind.

Perhaps the most poignant line of the song is "And I had a feeling that I belonged, and I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone." The singer yearns for a sense of belonging and purpose, and the possibility of finding that through their journey gives them hope.

The Tracey Chapman version of this song is an absolute classic, but I like this remix too. It was everywhere for about a week, then it just disappeared. It's a shame- it should have been a huge hit.
