A classically trained pianist who like many musicians searched for expression outside the accepted norms. This led to experiments in music making using radio noise, synthesisers, and whatever instruments came to hand. Such experiments led to opuses such as Sunburst and Submerged composed when in his mid-20's. Involved in various musical activities and collaborations since then, he has now returned to improvised reflective music with 'edge'.
4th Alternative has now released the first commercial album - "Dunes". Initially a digital only release from 4thalternative.bandcamp.com on 10th November 2011.

Yeah, I and my wife caught the new movie today and I thought it would be appropriate to treat myself to a repeat viewing of this 1984 version. I've never understood the hate this movie seems to have garnered over the years because, regardless of how "faithful" an adaptation from the book it may have been it's still one hell of a movie. I've always had a soft spot for this film and the restored scenes sort of help flesh it out a bit more. David Lynch, I think, was most successful in capturing the essential weirdness of the Duneiverse in this movie and Brian Eno and Toto crafted a better score even than Hans Zimmer's for the new film, good as Zimmer is, while the new movie shows more of the layers of the Duneiverse. I ended up as absorbed in that film as I get with this one. They're both good productions.

I read/watched nothing but a trailer before watching the new movie. As amazing a production as it was, I had no idea it was only part of the story. And the part of the story it covered left out crucial, essential information. It told us nothing of the Guild navigators or how they folded space, nothing whatsoever about mentats (and their "stained" lips looked more like an intentional tattoo), and almost nothing of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood and their quest to produce the supreme being. Oh, and the box scene was super weak. It's fine that they catered to the woke making some Fremen black, but making Kines a woman? Nope. I left the new movie thinking they would do like Lord of ths Rings and come out with an extended dvd version that fills in the gaps before a part 2 and then subsequent extended edition of that with the final combined work being 7-8 hours long. That would be killer because stylistically the new movie was badass. But I'm seeing HBO is supposedly doing a direct to streaming series obout the Bene Gesserit so maybe the movie won't ultimately fill in some of that crucial info.
This edit of Lynch's original work stll remains a masterpiece to me, and in just a half hour more than the new film gives enough of the details to capture the essence of the book.

- That is technically incorrect though, because the 1984 Spicediver & theatrical cuts are the entire first book story, while the 2021 Part 1 movie is only half the story. In effect, the Spicediver cut is the entire 1st book story at 3 hours total, while the Villeneuve version is a total of around 4-5 hours long, depending if Part 2 coming in 2023 will also be 2.5 hours long (2.5+2.5=5 hrs).

@Rob webnoid Errr, you basically said exactly what I said. Spicediver is 3hrs, Villenueve is 2.5, so half hour difference. Yes, a Villenueve part 2 would make it 5 total, but if they do extended versions to fill in gaps it will be 6-7 hours total.

Worth the read. They're all on Audible, and it's worth knowing the history. The Atreides aren't exactly blameless in the battle against the Harkonnens due to actions of Vorian Atreides. The Butlerian Jihad is where it starts and it can be tedious, but once you see why Vorian Atreides is such a bastard, it's worth it.

Beautiful edit and restoration of scenes, and the ending is so much better and faithful to the book. I think it's safe to call this the definitive version of Lynch's Dune. Yeah; "Spice Diver" did a great job of taking Lynch's (and the studio's meddling) sort of hot mess of an original release and pasting up a much more coherent and faithful version. And to be fair to David Lynch, he did film all these scenes, though many were cut from the original release. I think "Spice Diver" added in a bit of expository narration here and there, but mostly just rearranged the scenes to make more sense. An awesome effort by a great fan!!

I have 10 versions of Dune (1984) including on Laserdisc, HD DVD, and in French VHS. This is by far the best version for clarity of the storyline, which is hideously complicated. David Lynch did a magnificant job to get a 4 year long novel into a 2 hour movie.

I watched this as a kid. I didn't really follow the story. This version allowed me to understand the story as written. I remember in the original, he made it rain to kill the worms and I didn't exactly follow that the emperor set Atreides up to be slaughtered by the Harkonen. But that last part might have more to do with I was just a kid when I watched it all those years ago and have never read the books.

You have to remember, David Lynch was a fairly inexperienced filmmaker at the time he took this on - and he was under pressure from Dino DeLaurentiis to put out a profitable blockbuster. At the time, I don't think he realised what he was letting himself in for.
The source material is booby-trapped. In scale, the novel is a giant redwood. To fulfill a typical Hollywood contract for an approximately two-hour film, David Lynch HAD to whittle it down to a dowel stick. I don't envy him sitting in the cutting room - he KNEW that every time the scissors worked, yet another essential piece was being amputated from his Magnum Opus.

Dune will never be all things to all people. I know that from the reactions I've gotten when I've read the novel aloud to friends and family.
The theatrical cut was a failure - but considering the impossible position Lynch was in, I think he was a hero to have taken it as far as he did. It was a classic example of making the best of a bad situation.

We'll see how the new one turns out once the sequels are released...my only real gripe with this version is that it doesn't seem to include the shocking reveal that Jessica is secretly Baron Harkonnen's illegitimate daughter through the Bene Gesserit, and that both sets up for the sequels and makes Alia's murder of Baron Harkonnen more satisfying.

I once rendered my own edit of the 1984 Dune using a VCR (combining parts of the 3 official versions). I was rather fond of it until I came across this edition. This edition is truly a marvelous achievement and is better than any reworking I imagined possible. If I could get my hands on a Blu-ray copy, I would do so in a heartbeat ...as I am guessing many other people would.

And so this begs the question, why won't the entity that holds the rights to the 1984 Dune consider something like a Kickstarter campaign to bring Blu-ray copies of this version into existence? Such an endeavor could easily pay for itself; granting fans what they desire ...while supplying monetary profit to the rights holder. Everybody wins, right? (And if Mr. Spice Diver could get a little something for his time, that wouldn't be a bad thing either.)

Years and years ago, more than 30 now, I watched this on Saturday afternoon TV. Had no idea what it was. And loved it. It blew my mind. Saw where it was based in a book, so I got them, and was blown away. I read a d reread them. And sometime in the 90s I started hearing a rumor that there was this super rare, super long version. One said 3 hrs, some said more. I hunted everywhere.

My first exposure to this film was as a kid on TV also way back when! I didn't understand the story fully but I still found it fascinating! I recently re-watched it on HBO (armed with more knowledge of the back story of Dune) and was wondering why scenes were missing. I've come to learn that there was the original Theatrical version and a 3-hour TV extended version which added footage and had a new opening. (The was the one I always saw on TV when it came on)
The original theatrical version really suffers with so much cut out. The extended version helped a lot...but this Fan cut takes those two products and creates a much better movie!

I loved this movie since I was a kid and I read the books. I'll watch the new Dune too. But I truly have to admit, despite the fact that David Lynch's 1984 version got tons of criticism, it was this movie right here that made me fall in love with Dune in the first place. It may be an old film, but it still captures a certain essence and power of the story Frank Herbert wanted to tell. Frank Herbert was on the movie set for this movie and he was satisfied with it. The creator of Dune was satisfied with this movie. It's NOT all about the special effects and action scenes. Someone can always make up to date special effects to tweak this film. But the cast of actors was so convincing!!! The New 2020/ 2021 Dune may have all the special effects and we'll known actors, but it was THIS movie right here that taught me alot about the mind, about struggle, lose, and the power to overcome.

I loved Dune since I was a kid, for me it was very fascinating story and all that what was behind it. The music is for me epic, still... I have seen the new version, but I have to say that the old version is just timeless and thank to David Lynch it has it's own atmosphere "out of this world". Would they release this version in theaters I would go for sure :)

The film will be legendary very soon. It aged like a fine wine, having some Metropolis and monumental movie vibes. Also the cast is fantastic. Especially because the oldschool vibe mixes with modern brutality but not in a senseless way, its i would say as good as a kubrik. Easily.

@Buckstone It was shot on film, and the visuals were overlayed on top with other film material and non-pixel based effects, so resolution is a bit meaningless.

It would likely still require quite some remastering and cleaning though, as the reels are 40+ years old now.

Agreed! I had vague memories of the original showing years ago. I liked it then even with the crude CGIs. This version was shorter(?) but still had a more complete storyline that didn't leave a lot of unanswered questions? Looking forward to the newest version (#3) coming out this year?

I would very much like to think David Lynch has seen this edit and approves. Well, I have ALWAYS thought better of it than what the critics and masses did. In all the incarnations I viewed before it was good. But THIS! This finally unchains Lynch's genius. Very very enjoyable and impressive. Now for a second screening with a nice fat backdrop of psilocybin mushrooms so that I can really dig into it with my subconscious engaged more fully. Again: David Lynch produces something thought provoking and artistically triumphant. Hats off.

@the comedian Agree, I just saw the 2021 version n imo it was basically a 'cut n paste' updated sfx version of this renowned Lynch masterpiece w/much worse casting n acting. It's almost like the sfx n acting r inversely correlated n I'm not even claiming the 2021 sfx is 'better' bc the practical effects of 1984 version r much more realistic believable n ultimately impactful.

Watching the 2021 version I couldn't help but keep comparing every scene to the original n though not bad, it does not compare to the grand encompassing scifi masterpiece that David Lynch n company created!

Thank you so much for this edit. I think DL would be very proud of this cut. For the first-time viewer, I think this will fill in some of the complex story gaps that came with the original theatrical edit. I managed to get to see the DL 1984 version on the big screen this week and it was fantastic. Fingers crossed that one day this version can also be seen also on a big screen. Again thank you Spice Driver and the crew that brought this masterpiece together.

@big tech dicktators I thought the final books to wrap up the original series were okay (not as great as the preceding books though), but supposedly that's only because they heavily relied on writing his father had already done before he'd passed. Not sure how to feel about the expanded content though, prequels, etc. Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson will never be as talented and creative as Frank Herbert though.

The world of Dune in Frank Herbert's mind was much, much more rich and well-defined and thought out than what Brian had to go on. That being said, he really did a good job of handling it, but I have to concur, Brian really didn't see this world the way his father did.

I came back to this a day after watching the Denis Villeneuve's 2021 version in IMAX (which EVERYONE should watch, because its phenomenal). As a huge fan of the book, I'm grateful we got three excellent versions (yes, I even love the 2000 sci-fi miniseries). I hope Denis' version gets a full extended cut (or fan redux) just like this one did; because this fan-made edit is phenomenal.

WOW I just finished watching the fan edit of Dune and all I can say is fantastic job! This is the best version of the original Dune and I saw the original in the theater and walked away a bit confused at the editing but this edit puts everything into perspective. Again great job Spice Diver.

Fantastic production! Interestingly, I had just watched the recent 2020s version of Dune, part-1 before enjoying this older masterpiece. While the new rendering has indubitably considerably more sophisticated special effects (taking into account the appreciably more advanced technology), it pales in comparison to the marvelous 1984 assembly.
In fact, I consider the original creation as an uncanny amalgamation of the William Shakespeare's Richard III, the 1980s Flash Gordon and a touch of the original Star Trek, scintillated by the fabulous ambiance of late Victorian society... Just marvelous. BRAVO!!!

There is nothing redeeming in the end section of the theatrical cut of th movie and it ruins the experience. That's why cuts like this are necessary

It makes so much sense to have Irulan narrating the story because one of the main elements of the book is that it's a history of Muad'dib that was written by Irulan, which is why you have quotes from her at the beginning of every chapter. I'm really glad you decided to do that.

I loved the 1984 Dune for everything it could be. I felt with this edit, we finally got that, and it is amazing. The only thing I didn't see was The Beast Raban's head being delivered in a box.
