Girl
AFI Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll lay me down tonight
Much further down
Swim in the calm tonight
This art does drown

(What follows) me as the whitest lace of light
(Will swallow whole) just begs to be imbrued?
What follows has lead me to this place
Where I belong, with all erased
What follows!

All insects sing tonight
The coldest sound
I'd send God's grace tonight
Could it be found?

(What follows) me as the whitest lace of light
(Will swallow whole) just begs to be imbrued?
What follows has lead me to this place
Where I belong, with all erased

I'll lay me down tonight
Much further down
Watch stars go out tonight
On sinking ground

I'll lay me down, I'll lay me down

(What follows) me as the whitest lace of light
(Will swallow whole) just begs to be imbrued?
What follows has lead me to this place
Where I belong, with all erased

What follows will swallow whole
What follows will swallow whole

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to AFI's song "Girl in 2-3" are haunting and mysterious, leaving the listener to wonder what the singer is trying to convey. The song begins with the line "I'll lay me down tonight, much further down," which suggests a sense of surrender or defeat. The following line "Swim in the calm tonight, this art does drown" could signify a desire for peace or escape from a situation that is overwhelming or consuming.

The repetition of the phrase "What follows" throughout the song hints at a sense of foreboding or impending doom. The line "me as the whitest lace of light" is enigmatic, but could suggest a sense of purity or fragility. The phrase "will swallow whole" is repeated twice, emphasizing the sense of being consumed or overwhelmed. The line "Where I belong, with all erased" could suggest a desire for oblivion or starting over.

The second verse of the song continues with a sense of darkness and despair. The line "All insects sing tonight, the coldest sound" creates an eerie atmosphere, as if the singer is alone in a desolate landscape. The desire for God's grace, "Could it be found?" emphasizes a sense of desperation or hopelessness.

Overall, the lyrics to "Girl in 2-3" are open to interpretation, but they convey a sense of hopelessness, despair, and a desire for escape or oblivion.

AFI was a staple in my teenage to early twenties, I'm 35 now. AFI, H.I.M. and so many bands of this time forever hold a place in my heart.

@ReapWhatYaSow

Same. I am 37. I was a grunge, alternative, emo, punk. Still one at heart.

Can you believe that we're in our 30s now?! (Those of us who were teens when this came out.) I hate how fast time flies after graduating high school.

I had just met my husband in 2007, when he told me I should listen to AFI and Sing the Sorrow (13 years married now), he was working as an artist in LA and hanging around the same clubs as these guys (and actually met Davey as well in LA, told me he was super nice), and at that time I was still going to art school in Finland and barely knew anything of AFI except that I had maybe seen one of their music videos on TV (Miss Murder), the imagery of that video kinda stuck with me. Catchy song too. It's actually a really good fucking song. I love the album as well, Decemberunderground, but for some reason... Crash Love is my favorite.

My husband has been telling me that one day he will own this album on vinyl, and... been listening to that vow for a while now. I just bought it for him as a surprise ♥ I don't know when/how I will give it to him though. His birthday is coming up in March, but I don't think I can keep it as a secret for so long. So I think I will just give it to him as a thank you for... being him, and sticking with me for so long and encouraging me to be who I am ♥ And I think I just wanna tell him that year 2020 is the year, when you became the owner of Sing the Sorrow, so something good came out of this wretched time :P And I suppose the title of that album frames the picture of 2020 well too.

Hope you have an atomic 2021 ...and time flies, when you're having fun in life ♥ Just an observation.

33 here and yes, i remember perfectly, i feel our generation was super lucky. I was and scene/goth girl that had her emo days and i remember listening to AFI and MCR so much alongside my heavier European bands and hearing this again... it takes me back to dark and yet beautiful days of my teenage years.
