I worked within the prison system until this year. I saw some of the most bizarre things ever. I worked at a Max house and there were times that it was pure bedlam. Some people were so volatile that I felt sorry for the other inmates.

I was in prison for five years and noticed a lot of the prisons I went to the guards were in gangs to and would bring the drugs in for the other gangs to sell. I seen a guy that would get money orders for drugs and just send the number to his gf or whoever to go cash it in. He was making 4 to 5 thousand a month he sent home. That’s not counting what he pays the guards to bring it in. You can make 160 dollars off 1 sub strip in prison. These guys don’t care if they get a couple years. Free rent free food and they are making tons of money to send home to their family.

I recently left my job as a CO after a decade. The things I've seen... We need to do something for prison reform. Some prisoners are so volatile and violent there's no way they should be with normal prisoners. Please remember, there are many people in there for NON VIOLENT crimes fighting for their lives everyday. There are extremely mentally ill people in there as well as extremely violent. And I've seen men go into solitary confinement come out as ghosts of their former selves and they were put in there for DEFENDING themselves but in prison, it doesn't matter.

It's horrible. And it's all for profit now so it's even worse.. They just pack people in there, as many as they can get in because they get money for it.

I was in a facility for 8 years. I have great respect for many guards who treated me like a human being. This treatment helped me change my perspective on life. Solitary confinement makes people go crazy in time.

Sasquatch Models that’s great! but many people will not get hired after being incarcerated. many people may not have the correct social or financial supports to steer them out of bad doings, which usually leads them back into jail. plus ssssooooo many more things. just because you didn’t experience that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. and if there’s more than one person saying it, it’s not the person, it’s the system. i’ve never been to jail but it seems like he was totally complacent with being in jail. which would be a “positive attitude.”

I was in jail for nine months (for shooting whitetail deer on my own property without a license) in the "general population" unit. It drove me nuts to the point where I purposely assaulted another inmate just so I could get sent to solitary confinement for 30 days. It was rough, but a whole lot better than living in the midst of a bunch of loudmouth @$$holes 24/7.

@jim dunk Turnover rate at Rikers is one out of four hired remain on that job. Many Officers grew up with the inmates and lack the ability and character to realize their role as Officer. They are friends first with the inmates and Officer second. They are responsible for bringing in drugs and weapons. Many good Officers hate working with them and often wonder if the something happens would these Officers have their back.

I know someone who worked in a prison. I said how many would you set free. He said almost all of them.
People make mistakes. Great rehabs are opening up. Go to rehab or jail IS YOUR only CHOICE.
Some stay clean. Others always turn to drugs again because of depression, you can't work depressed, so you take a little something to make it go away.
We obviously have a huge mental health problem.
Not everyone needs to go to jail.

If you think it was bad then, it's completely insane now. I work for a public defender and my clients regularly report getting cut, gangs run units, and most of the people there haven't even been convicted of anything. It's crazy.

Honestly I think it's great what he's trying to do with solitary confinement. I also understand the issues people have with it. It's a very fine line both ways. But it does make sense to try to give people hope and rehabilitation. I know what isolation does to my mental health so I can't imagine if I was someone that struggled with aggression and anger by using violence and having someone lock me up in solitary confinement with those type of thoughts and not having any kind of Hope or help. You're literally creating a more dangerous monster than they were prior. We all make our choices but when you treat someone like an animal that's what you're going to get. I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of negative feedback on what I'm saying but I'm just trying to see this from my own experiences. I've had run into with the law for different reasons. I struggled with drugs and alcohol and got arrested a few times and I witnessed firsthand what solitary confinement did to people I knew. It changes a person and darkens their minds. The devil can have his way with you even more when you're alone in a dark place

I was abused (sexually, physically, and emotionally) as a child. Depending on the abuse type, the abusers were friends of fam, strangers, family members, cops. I should have been a statistic but I kept pushing forward. But not everyone made it through. I put my time into my own children and continue to give talks to young people about life, schooling, homeschooling, technology, martial arts, chess, etc. Governments, religious leaders and the super-rich don't care!

Depending on the crime, incarceration should be focussed on rehabilitation. The way these people are treated is completely inhumane. They'll never be able to re-enter society and live a normal life.
Yes, I know some may not deserve freedom or luxuries... But some shouldn't be ever treated like that, especially the 57 sent for non-violent crimes. No wonder the US has the highest re-offence rate. Solitary confinement should be a crime in itself. I'll repeat myself: the focus should be rehabilitation. I hope this tourture will change.

It's rikers island, New York. Watch some NY drill songs, of which there are literally hundreds if not thousands, and get back to me. I agree that people there for non violent crimes probably almost all shouldn't be there but for the others 'rehab' isn't going to work when there's not been actual proper habilitation in the first place in a lot of their lives. I mean go look at this kid called Bouba Savage. He's 15 now, making drill songs about shooting his opps and making money on the block but he started when he was 12. He's surrounded by drugs, guns, older girls, expensive watches and cars. If he goes to prison for 5 years, no matter how comfy or horrible it is, he will go out to his people afterwards. Back to the same environment he literally grew up in. He will always make more money now rapping and trapping than any 9-5 job an after prison program would get him. I don't know what the answer is, but I think it would be futile to try and improve things on the inside when it's looking like things are getting worse on the outside. Although the 80% waiting for trial and 57% on non violent crimes needs to be greatly reduced.

Joseph Potts is spot on in terms of a correctional facility you have to set your personal feelings aside and use the time for the purpose of it's intent especially seeing that they will re-enter society some day, neurologist tells us a person doesn't fully develop their cerebral cortex until they reach 25 years of age most of the offenders are teenager's growing into what they may become.

My brother in law has been to prison and he says solitary is like torture. Humans need interaction. And yes each time he went he came home way worse. He was more angry each time. He had an addiction and that is why he would steal and eventually went to prison. He needed help he did not need to be locked in a cage

If you can't find gratitude from your freedom - from the small things taken for granted like family, good food, and peace of home after your release - it isn't mental illness, it's a lack of gratitude and a victim mentality. Prison reform is necessary, but you have to understand - they aren't "treated like animals", the fact is : THEY ACT LIKE ANIMALS. And that is absolutely unjust and horrific for normal people to have to put up with.

You CAN make a difference. When I worked in the jail facility in medical,, the hard thing about it all was most of the staff did NOT like when you tried treating them human,, and it came down to them trying to force me to take sides, an us vs them mentality. Completely ridiculous!Unfortunately, I left because staff ganged up on me. Extremely broken hearted over it. I was able to calm down several of our patients there simply by listening to them and treating them as human beings, not another number. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd absolutely LOVE to take part

This is so sad. I did 4 years in prison. In Kansas. They refer to it as candy land because although any time behind those walls is hell, it's easy when compared to doing time anywhere else. I couldn't imagine doing time in a place like rikers Island. And I know there's people in there that absolutely deserve to be there. But then there's the ones who don't deserve it. Prison isn't for everyone. It really isn't. Even if you are considered a criminal or have committed crimes, prison doesn't help everyone. Some of those people need a different kind of help. Prison is only going to cause them more problems that could be avoided.

That's immediate asswhooping and instant snitch status. As soon as you walk away from the guard somebody will check you on it. If you talk to a c.o. it's always with a witness

I feel bad for the dudes that are wrongfully convicted of a crime, go to prison, and then are forced to commit ACTUAL crimes just to survive. I've been in Rikers. They are not violent because of how they are treated though being treated badly does bring out their violence. I can assure you these guys understand violence and use it just like a Roman warrior or member of Attila the Hun's invading army - as an asset. And they can also be perfectly cordial guys. They have the full spectrum of capability, whereas most people have suppressed the ability to use violence in exchange for some social gain. These men have no social connection outside family, thus nothing to lose and nothing to gain.

I was falsely accused. Florida allowed my ex fiancees step dad who knew me and drove to my moms house to argue with her be my judge. They said he didn’t need to recuse himself because we were not related sanguinelly. (By blood). I also had medical evidence proving my innocense. I was sent to Lowell Annex for a year where they house some of the most dangerous female inmates in Florida and Tango dorm held death row. Many lifes and people with natural life sentences. Racism came from white officers on black inmates and black officers on white inmates. There were drugs all over the place. One female got murdered by an officer during solitary confinement. I never saw it but I know there was a bartering system of sexual favors for various items. #Flor-i-duh exactly

Honestly, if any of these inmates are in for murder, rape or harm against children, then I’m glad to know they are suffering in prison. The others… this treatment is over the top, unnecessary and will likely create an abusive person

That’s the problem, the majority aren’t in there for first degree major offenses like you mentioned. Some are there for stealing stuff of relatively low value, some for selling some weed in a corner st the wrong moment st the wrong time. I get that abiding by the law is important, but this kind of disproportionate punishment is just gonna radicalize and further mess up young people who committed non violent offences, who oftentimes did so out of survival instinct because they were born in extreme poverty in run down neighbourhoods, where there isn’t any funding for education programs or places to learn a trade for little cost, etc.

They’re just going to turn most people who end up there into even more violent, dangerous and messed up real criminals… even those who weren’t like that in the first place. Build another facility where you can separate young from non young offenders for starters, so that the older hardened criminals don’t indoctrinate and brains wash the younger people into becoming the same hardened old criminal type, force them to join a gang, etc.

I spent many years in jail due to my actions. I got myself cleaned up straightened up and now I have a house on a lake. So I have very little sympathy for these people they're going to have to learn the hard way the worst part and what I do have sympathy for is the fact that they will never be able to live down their crimes even though they serve their time. 80% of employers today will not hire ex-convicts. And that makes life really hard now that I sympathize with. If you're still under sentence and you're doing your time I have no sympathy cuz you got what you earned.

First, American Criminal Justice system should be changed to only focus on the ones that really need jail sentences. Next, those who are incarcerated should be given an extensive meditation classes that could help them realize their mistakes and make better decisions in the future.

"we didnt sign up to be babysitters" that is literally your whole job. to watch over the inmates and make sure they're safe and following the rules while serving their time. you just want to go to work, sit on your ass, find some contraband and get some people in trouble so you feel good about yourself, and then go home. you want all the glory of being a corrections officer without doing any of the actual work.

I am a senior that has been essentially on lockdown for 2 year due to covid. TV/YouTube is the only thing that has kept me sane. Even in solitary, these guys should have music and tv/YouTube. Our minds need to be occupied. When they have no distraction from the misery of prison life, of course, they are going to lash out at the guards.

It's designed to keep society safe from people like them. You want to get rid of it because it's not helping them, but it does help keep other people from becoming victims of them because after all they were committing crimes before they went in there. As far as the guy that was there for stealing computers, sound like a smart man that learned his lesson " it's my first time and my last time" some people want to make victims out of people that go around victimizing other people. Let them move with you and in your neighborhood then. The people make society.

It’s fair to ask what it costs to maintain these prisoners and whether the result is worth the cost. There are better solutions to the perpetual problem of violent crime including everything from investment in early childhood and family support to capital punishment. Filling up prisoners with lifers doesn’t solve the problem, it just prolongs it.

I don’t understand why there hasn’t been anyone to file a CLASS ACTION lawsuit against the US Government on behalf of all prisoners being detained in the US for the countless humanitarian infractions and crimes committed under their supervision.
They should require every penal institution to provide a sane, safe and humane environment for ALL prisoners to complete your sentences. If they can’t do that, they have no business being in the “prison business”.

The state of prisons in America is an absolute travesty. The fact that it’s a multi-billion dollar profitable business is absolutely criminal.

I don’t understand why any jail or prison doesn’t work towards helping these inmates become better people. When you watch that show on A&E 60 days it scares the helm out of you because these inmates run the show when nobody is looking. These prisons/jails need more staff that helps prepare these criminals to become better people instead of even harder criminals

i think people tend to forget the idea that you cant be the bigger man in prison is real! you are PUSHED to be violent. THE FIRST thing socially you do when you get to prison is you let it be known you stand up for your self. it doesnt matter if its fighting the first guy you see or waiting for someone to step up. you show where you are in this hierarchy, the pecking order.

I think this is a step in the right direction. Solitary confinement though necessary at time's, is not a tool to be used for a permanent stay. Also,yes young adult's brain are not fully formed until the age of 25. I feel regardless of the situation or evil or danger. They still should be treated as a human being. With intensive therapies implemented. Truly tragic and sad for all,I'd say. But reform is what's necessary in order to establish some sort of change.

I always told myself at the minimum everyone needs a radio even in solitary confinement, granted this will have to be somehow built into the sell, most cells have a speaker box for communication with staff, having a way to incorporate that speaker box with a radio is better a right step to ensure sanctity even for the lows of the lows you have to remember there are corrections officers that we still have to think of to ensure they go home to their families and some people are actually innocent as DNA can take years to come back to remove a conviction

Solitary creates a psychotic break or makes some with psychological issues even worse so it does need to be taken away its terrible some people get stuck in a small cell for years and are so used to it that they can't be anywhere else people like serial killers and sadistic psychopaths should be separated from others but not someone who just got mad one day yk ... also another issues is they sometimes hire people who don't work cause they wanna keep people safe but to bully inmates so there are many things that need to be fixed .

They need to separate prisoners for less or non- violent crimes in separate institutions and for the mentally ill criminals, as well. They should, also, be separated according to their age and the types of crimes they have committed.

In principle I 100% agree that solitary is a terrible thing. But I do think you can't ignore the CO's arguments. Very few people have to deal with such volatile people on a daily basis. There HAS to be an alternative deterrent before they get rid of solitary

Still beats being on the street. Aside from violent offenders in for life, I thought the point of prison was to rehabilitate and deter another offence in the process. And yes, denouncing these crimes sets a precedent for how we handle people who are criminals. I’m just wondering where the line becomes so thin between punishment and rehabilitation.

What some jails do is group setting dorms with cells in them for lock down purposes and when it comes to solitary confinement they do in your cell punishments for up to weeks at a time while everyone else is still let loose around you in the dorm setting. Actually making "lock down" more of a punishment with the want and need of getting out
