The kid they showed being slammed by an officer, who later committed suicide was Kalief Browder. He was arrested for supposedly stealing a backpack... he was 16 and sat in rikers for 3 years, an innocent child. His story breaks my heart, sadly there's a lot more lost kids just like him.

i feel horrible for murphy. he clearly isn't dangerous, he was just defending his sister. dead or not, having someone mock a serious issue about your sibling makes your blood boil, and the fact that her killer did it is infuriating. he doesn't deserve that. plus, the killer's dead and he doesn't have to go to prison anymore, murphy does. for 25 years. it's heartbreaking

I feel so bad for that young man who's sister was murdered. Of course I can't really say I know him as a person but he really does strike me as someone who just wanted to defend his dead sister. Heartbreaking that he's facing that many years... I hope he's able to keep his positivity even in the face of that future, he seems like a real shining light for at least that area of the prison

I had a friend, as a teen who was wrongful accused and awaited trial on Rikers took 2years to find him innocent. He went in as a carefree,fun-loving goofy kid and came out cold, sullen and standoffish...his eyes...his smile were never the same 😔

My sister died in 2015 and there were people all over the internet mocking her death. I felt such anger towards these people, but they were strangers on the internet. I don’t know how I would have reacted had I known the people mocking my sister personally. I feel for Murphy and I hope he stays positive and can serve his sentence and be released, to someday be a counsellor and a light for the young men of the future who will need his story and guidance. I would love to work in these prisons and help keep these young men positive.

Kudos to the commissioner for trying a new approach especially with the kids. And Diane brought some humanity to their stories, i wasn't expecting her to so that was pretty decent of her. And poor Murphy, poor victims too. No one wins here, it's all so sad. Parents have a lot of work on their hands so their kids don't end up in places like this.

I agree with everything you said but the last part I want to expand upon. This isnt a parental issue. This is a societal issue and until society changes in a way that prioritizes humanity, well, its like we're listening to a record that is endlessly on repeat. We already have the technology and the means to provide food, housing, education, medical, travel and much more to every single human being on earth and certainly in the US. The fact that we don't is a choice. The fact that we prioritize a system that values wealth accumulation and exploitation of the poor and working class is a choice. (capitalism) The fact that we refuse to do away with a centuries old system that was built by and for white men and in which racism and other forms of oppression are not a symptom but were built into the system by design, well, that's a choice too (statism, plutocracy) When will we value life over money? When will we value community over power? The things we want to see change can't change because they are inherent to these systems and institutions of oppression. We can't begin to address those issues in a meaningful way until those institutions are dismantled.

Prayers go up every day and night to those men and women who work there, the ones who are housed there, the ones who make the daunting trip across the bridge to visit someone there. One of the most heartbreaking things said by one young man is "no I'm not afraid in here home is worse"... for a young man to think Rikers Island is better , and safer than the home he came from is heartbreaking , and very revealing on the path that has ended him up in prison in the first place. What kind of positivity could there possibly be in an environment that he deems scarier than prison? Absolutely disgustingly sad. I just feel like this country needs to pay more attention to these young men who are not violent , and who will be put back on the street because if you leave them to just befriending other inmates , they're going to come out worse than they came in. It is just the way it is , and I think this Warden has some really good ideas but I agree with the guard who spoke about not removing segregation for the 18 to 21 year olds and I agree I do not think segregation should be taken away for 18 to 21 year olds , they can be the most dangerous because they're so unpredictable and immature and unwise in the ways of the world the real world outside of their surreal world in their Hood , trying to prove something half the time. That can be more dangerous than anything however I do think there are measures they can take for people who are in the hole like they said giving them treatment and care and not just leaving them stuck in a cell for 23 hours a day that's the way to go , but if they break the rules violently they need to be put off to their self where they can calm the f*** down and not hurt anybody else. And what the guard was talking about with them wearing their tennis shoes and everything instead of just their flip flops or slides yeah they call that "suited and booted" usually she's 100% right, it does indicate something violent is about to go down ,like she said , no one wants to fight without good shoes and not being suited up as much as possible for protection n hidden weapons ,etc....., but honestly I think it has more to do with the TV cameras in this case LOL

I specifically remember hearing a story about a female basketball star getting murdered in the projects. I did not remember her brother getting in trouble for retaliation. So sad, such an intelligent charismatic brother.

This needs to be implemented in all jails. I have met people right out of prison for the 5th time. I have noticed a huge difference in their ability to stay good or go back. When they were shown someone believes in them and has faith they won’t do it again they had a higher success rate. But, when people treated them like a criminal right out of prison they failed fast.

100% agree. Our system is flawed to the max. There was a case awhile back where a karate instructor kidnapped one of his students and was molesting him. When the police got him and were walking him through the courtroom in cuffs the dad of the boy shot the convict in the head as “retaliation” for his son. Got off Scott free. If someone can retaliate for their son that’s still living idk why someone cant for their sister who was murdered.

It’s not just having nothing that is the problem , it’s also how many traumatic adverse experience these kids go through. Abuse, drugs, gangs, early loss ( death of caregivers significant others) all this can literally be added up as ACE scores and the higher that is greater disadvantage compared to kids who have been kept safe from these harms. These officers need to get an education before they are let loose.

common denominator is the absence of a father in the home. Nothing will change if
men walk away from the children they create. In those cases these poor kids have no
chance to escape the poverty, drugs, and violence that engulf them.

I’m glad they’re making some improvements.
It’s a big accomplishment( (just them trying to make improvements not only for staff safety but improvements for the inmates) in itself and it’s more than a huge percentage of America’s prisons can say.
As for Murphy, I really do feel for him.

Sad to see all those young men in there. Glad someone is trying to make a change for the good. Jail ain't supposed to be fun, but it's not supposed to make you worse either. It's supposed to teach you a lesson, make you a better person, but that's not what happens when you lock someone in a cage like an animal and treat them like one.

There really is a problem with the prison system and I do really hope someone in the higher ups realizes that by giving these people education, training and some help for their mental health, they could decrease the violent tendencies. By giving them things to do and busy throughout the day, it distracts them from violent mindsets and helps them set personal goals

This hurts my heart. I live no where near gang violence but I work with kids who grew up in poor abusive households and I see those kids in the eyes of all of those inmates. Kids who grew up too fast and had to maladapt to survive physically and mentally. I pray for these babies 🙏 they were born pure and deserved much better.

Diane Sawyer is the truth! What a great reporter and journalist. I hope this project on Rikers Island will bring prison reform and possibly even help with some appeals to reduce the sentences for some of those young people who participated in the video. Murphy and Franklin's stories captivated me and I pray God would intervene in their situations.

Waiting years just for a trial is beyond disgusting. Example: Kalief Browder. The young man they showed being abused by officers, who committed suicide. He couldn’t live with the trauma. They were supposed to shut this place down for how long now? Someone’s word against yours can have you in Rykers for YEARS. Can you imagine that? And yes, I wouldn't be saying this if I were his victim's family, but gosh he loved his sister so much that all that rage and anger took over.... The story about that guy Murphy is fucking devastating. His sister is killed by rival gang members and the family loses her. He was charged with conspiracy on one of the gang members and now he’s facing another 25 years in prison and the family will potentially lose him. That’s a heartbreaking story

There were four people who were charged with the murder, three of them pleaded guilty and only one person (Murphy) took it to trial. Months before Murphy's trial, the same judge sentenced his ops to 40 years and 60 years in prison and these guys didn't even kill anyone. Murphy still went to trial and ended up getting 50 years. His three friends who pled guilty for their role will be home soon. Let this be a lesson: Always take accountability for your actions or suffer from the consequences.

My heart just breaks, watching Murphy. He says he’s innocent, and he was convicted- I don’t know anything about the case (all I know is what I’ve seen in this video), but it makes sense that he did kill someone from the gang that killed his sister. Even if that’s true, 25 years to life seems too harsh. His crime was reactionary. And what if he IS innocent?
It’s devastating to watch him go from the guy who saves other people to the guy that needs saving. And it really showed that even murderers are human beings. They have humanity- something people refuse to recognize about people in jail.
Overall, this makes me very sad. The inmates- especially the youngest- they grew up in an environment with few choices, and a lot of violence. It’s almost inevitable that people raised surrounded by anger and pain and hopelessness would eventually end up at Rikers. If Murphy’s family didn’t grow up in the projects, maybe his sister wouldn’t have been killed. And in an environment where violence is commonplace, it’s not hard to imagine how Murphy might react- he clearly adored and loved his sister. What would you do if the person you looked up to and loved most in the world was killed, maybe just for being at the wrong place at the wrong time?
I’m not making excuses for these crimes- people made the choices they made. Bad choices. They didn’t have to choose violence- but it’s also not a surprise. And being locked up at Rikers clearly only makes things worse. I respect the warden, who sees the humanity in all the inmates at Rikers, and wants to do the best he can by them. And, as he pointed out, most of the inmates will eventually be freed- and maybe what he does will prevent some from killing again. That benefits everyone, inside and out of Rikers. What he is trying to do is both brave and dangerous- but there is so much potential there- for the good of all society.

It should be illegal to wait in jail more than 2/3 months MAX to wait for trial. What if they're found not guilty. Who gives them back those months of their life? You know what it can do to a person being locked up not having any power to be able to even know when your going home? I mean they don't even have a date to go home either! It makes people crazy and seems like forever. Every inmate who doesn't have life should have a date to go home to have one thing to look foward too. (Non violent and nothing insane crimes)

I like the way the warren talks about being raised with nothing but with strict parents, most kids don't even have that. Me for ex. raised by my granny at a small. Now I'm an adult and don't hold grudges towards my mom or anyone. I believe we all have choices to live, learn and grow. Wow man..this stuff is so humbling and keeps you so grateful for the fact of having the ability to live a life with all you need without having to commit crime just to keep your family fed and sheltered. I'm not a fool n I do realize that there are plenty of people out there committing crime enjoying it and profiting off of it far more than just keeping the bills paid , but there are also a good amount of young men and older men who are locked up for either trumped-up charges, marijuana charges that shouldn't even be anymore and I have seen some releases with that but they need to release far more people considering what the laws are now and worst of all innocent men are sitting in those walls and that's a proven fact there is too high of a percentage of the average amount of innocent men in prison who have been convicted and are left to rot when they did nothing. I'm not saying the kid at the end is innocent I wasn't at the trial I didn't see all the evidence. I do think that there is some room for the fact that it was his sister that was murdered and That Could set anybody off in a way that they would make them behave in a way that usually wouldn't , and make them do something that they normally wouldn't do , and dear God what if he is completely innocent? That man did the best he could try and make sure everybody else was okay and in my heart I don't think a guilty man worrying about going to prison because he knows he did what he did could do that but that's when you're talkin about the average Joe. You never know what anybody criminal and criminally minded is capable of. It's hard to speak on any of it unless you're an expert anyway but I'm just going by my experience in my life and with people I know. It was heartbreaking to watch him go from the upbeat person who went around trying to make sure everybody was okay to hanging the sheet over his window and not even being able to speak to Diane Sawyer one last time. That really gets me in the feels for sure honestly I hope he did it if he's going to have to do the time. I hate to say that but it is what it is.

At the end of the day Murphy was/is a human being with feelings & I hope he is doing well in his everyday life.
I truely believe he was/is a blessing to the other men, walking the halls being there for everyone, all I can honestly hope for is that someone was/is there for him when he needed/needs someone..

@jamesyboii100 Absolutely. Because whether we like it to believe or not there's a pretty big chunk of percentage of the prisoners that are bound to get back on outside world. And if the commissioners' of the jails are doing it right like Comm. Ponte, we will have a much better future to look at because the prisoners are taught and rehabilitated correctly. Therefore, when they got out of prison they'll no longer be who they are before jail. And I'd like to believe that there would be a pretty much high percentage of those ex-convict to get their life back together and will be a successful law abiding citizen.

THIS is how we should have always been doing it. Obviously being locked up is no fun and they might have done what their there for. Most of these men have trauma from home and prolly the streets. I've been diagnosed with PTSD for 6 years and I can assure u one of the hardest things is being by urself,with nothing to do,to keep u somewhat busy. What happens is they think of all the horrible things they've seen and they get violent because that's the only way they've been taught their whole lives.

Murphy's story is heartbreaking. I just don't understand the American justice system. From all the shows I've watched it seems like there is a multi-tier judicial system for those WITH money, those withOUT…. plus race. It's appalling how the courts are so subjective. It seems to be mostly based on whether or not you can afford a good, private attorney, or a poorly paid, overworked PD.
