Ray Road
A Breath Before Surfacing Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Upon a throne of doubt I sat
Contemplating where my life was at
And in that certain way, fate smiled
Fate smiled on me
They say such foolish dreams could never manifest into reality
They'll wish we never made a sound
WE ARE A LACK OF SILENCE
Our shadows seen on the horizon
A cloud of smoke is billowing
Why do we carry these torches around?
In hopes to burn everything to the ground
As though it never happened we'll carry on
Climbing towards the final destination
Our final resting place
Every breath that we now take
Every moment that we're awake
We can't forget we could be alone in this world

Strive for this as though it's your magnum opus
They'll wish we never made a sound

Overall Meaning

In the beginning of "Ray Road" by A Breath Before Surfacing, the singer finds himself sitting on a throne of doubt, contemplating the state of his life. He then notices that fate has given him a smile, in a certain way. The singer is acknowledging this moment of fate and a push toward something greater. The second verse begins with the notion that some believe that such impossible dreams could never exist in reality. The singer is suggesting that they, as individuals, possess the power to prove these people wrong. The line, "WE ARE A LACK OF SILENCE," could be interpreted as a call to action. They are not going to keep silent and let others dictate their reality. They will make noise, they will be heard.

Following that are lines about how their actions will change the world, and people will look back wishing they never made a sound or made a change. The singer is recognizing that their desire to "burn everything to the ground" could have some negative consequences. However, they will continue to climb towards their final destination, their final resting place, never forgetting that they may be alone in this world. The singer ends with the advice, to make every breath and moment count, and to strive towards the ultimate goal as though it is your magnum opus.

I wish I could have been there. This has been a inspirational album for me for years. You guys were a great band.

Thanks man, glad you like the solo! We had to rush so bad to record this album that I'm glad it came out so well.

Thick_propheT

Recently discovered this album on Spotify. What a hidden gem. Late oughts/early teens deathcore is the best and this is some of the best of the best

One of the best guitar solos i've ever heard. 2021 and it's still banger! Hands down for ABBS!

Nobody ever stole our gear, haha(I was their guitarist for a few years). Not while I was with them, at least. We stopped playing simply because I had to leave due to personal reasons, and they never found a full time replacement. I'm still sad that we stopped playing right as we were actually gaining momentum, but such is life. Rock on, folks! \m/

@Matthew Oliver I don't believe he's actively involved in any music projects right now, but you can find him on IG at @embracethemeteor
