Summertime
Aaron Neville Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Fish are jumpin', I know they are jumpin' and the cotton is so high
Your Daddy's rich and your Mama is good lookin'
So hush little baby, don't you cry
No need to cryin'
One of these mornings
One of these mornings
You will spread your wings
Spread your wings
Then you'll take to the sky
But till that morning
There is nothin' gonna harm you
With your Daddy and your Mama keep on standin' by
They're standin' by
But till that morning
Until that morning
There is nothin' gonna harm you
With your Daddy and your Mama keep on standin' by
With your Daddy and your Mama keep on standin' by
Summertime, summertime, summertime, summertime
Aaron Neville's version of "Summertime" has a soothing effect on the listeners due to the softness of his voice, mellow production, and the beautiful description of summertime. The song has a relaxed vibe and represents the idyllic summer season, where the weather is beautiful, and there is nothing to worry about. The opening line, "Summertime and the livin' is easy," sets a tone of relaxation one feels during the summer. The "fish are jumpin'," and everything is beautiful in nature. Neville then describes the cotton, which is metaphorically high, representing abundance and prosperity. He sings about how the baby's daddy is rich and mama is good looking, signifying good fortune and beauty. Neville calms the baby and tells it, "hush little baby, don't you cry," showing that there is nothing to worry about during the summertime.
Neville then moves into the second verse, speaking of optimism about the future. He tells the baby that "one of these mornings," it will rise and "spread its wings." This lyric represents moving forward and breaking free to embrace new beginnings. The line "take to the sky" symbolizes achieving greatness and success. The idea that nothing will harm the baby is prevalent in the lyrics, and Neville reinforces it by saying that the parents will always be standing by to protect their child. The repetition of "till that morning" reinforces the optimism about the future, and nothing will go wrong till that morning. The final repetition of "summertime" rounds out the song, bringing it full circle to a relaxing, peaceful vibe.
