1.) An American black metal band with a sound comprised of both thrash and death metal. Formed in Plano, Texas in 1989, the band's name was originally "Dolmen" but this was soon changed to "Absu", drawing thematic influence from esoteric middle-eastern and Celtic mythology. They recorded four albums and an EP from 1993 to 2001. After the release of Tara in 2001 the band was put on hiatus as guitarist and bassist Equitant Ifernain and Shaftiel departed, citing musical differences and disinterest in the band, respectively.
The current line-up is:
Proscriptor McGovern - Vocals (lead), Drums (Proscriptor, ex-Melechesh, ex-Judas Iscariot)
Vis Crom - Guitars (Rumpelstiltskin Grinder, ex-Armageddon, ex-Evil Divine)
Ezezu - Vocals (backing), Bass (ex-Panzram)
In 2007, Proscriptor resurrected Absu, announcing a new line-up and a new (self-titled) album was released in 2009.

Turning to dust
Gusting with the wind
They (still) dream of an older delusion
Reigning, raining
Dampening the empire
Their excursion burns with the ashes
Calm lakes mirrored
Glistening everywhere
They rove through the waters and fires
Silent seas paused
Enlightening low light
Their visions for imperishability
The weakened flesh
Expecting downfall
Their ashes spread through lightless, starless skies
The Eminence
Not expecting wind
They (now) think of a newer illusion
[Chorus:]
PRAISE - The ancient times
AS EARTH - Equates their end
COMMAND - The ancient times
LIKE TARA - Shall never pretend
DIES - Irae, dies illa
QUIDQUID - Latet adparebit
NIL - Inultum remanebit
DEPOSE - Towards ancient times
[Repeat Chorus]
[Repeat All Verses In Reversed Order Excluding The First & Last]
The lyrics of Absu's song "From Ancient Times" speak of a people who once ruled a great empire, now reduced to ashes and dust. They dream of an older delusion, perhaps a nostalgia for a time of power and prosperity. However, their excursion burns with the ashes of their former glory, and they are now weakened and expecting downfall. Even in their silent moments, they envision imperishability, a longing for a legacy that will outlast their physical bodies.
The chorus of the song praises the ancient times, equating them with the end of Earth. The command of those times, like Tara, will never pretend. The Latin phrases "dies irae, dies illa, quidquid latet adparebit, nil inultum remanebit" suggest a message of judgment, that whatever is hidden will be revealed and nothing will remain unpunished. The people now look towards ancient times, perhaps hoping to find guidance or redemption.
Overall, the lyrics of "From Ancient Times" speak to the universal theme of the rise and fall of empires, the search for immortality and the role of time in shaping our perspective.
