1.) An American black metal band with a sound comprised of both thrash and death metal. Formed in Plano, Texas in 1989, the band's name was originally "Dolmen" but this was soon changed to "Absu", drawing thematic influence from esoteric middle-eastern and Celtic mythology. They recorded four albums and an EP from 1993 to 2001. After the release of Tara in 2001 the band was put on hiatus as guitarist and bassist Equitant Ifernain and Shaftiel departed, citing musical differences and disinterest in the band, respectively.
The current line-up is:
Proscriptor McGovern - Vocals (lead), Drums (Proscriptor, ex-Melechesh, ex-Judas Iscariot)
Vis Crom - Guitars (Rumpelstiltskin Grinder, ex-Armageddon, ex-Evil Divine)
Ezezu - Vocals (backing), Bass (ex-Panzram)
In 2007, Proscriptor resurrected Absu, announcing a new line-up and a new (self-titled) album was released in 2009.

Absu Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It stretches from the nether waters inside
As the chaos lives again: vapors condense
Ushum-Gal allots the beasts to the chantry
Eridu!
Erech!
The malign sprite dances
The natural fiend strikes
The bottom of the sea
How deep the engulfment sleeps?
And the chasm, how deep?
How deep the engrossment haunts?
And the gulch, how deep?
The bedlam is always wide awake
And the chaos alive
Between The Absu of Eridu:
It will call the temples
The bedlam is always wide awake
And the chaos alive
Between The Absu of Erech:
It will call the mountains
The bedlam is always wide awake
And the chaos alive
Between The Absu of Eridu:
It will call the temples
The bedlam is always wide awake
And the chaos alive
Between The Absu of Erech:
It will call the mountains
An empty void will always enlarge itself
It stretches from the nether waters inside
As the chaos lives again: vapors condense
Ushum-Gal allots the beasts to the chantry
The lyrics to Absu's song The Absu of Eridu & Erech paint a vivid picture of a chaotic and mystical world, where ancient gods and spirits reign supreme. The first stanza sets the stage for the rest of the song, describing the vast emptiness and darkness of the void that exists in the nether waters of this universe. It is a void that seems to constantly grow and expand, and as it does so, it gives rise to vapors that condense into the living chaos that governs this world, giving life to the beasts that call it home. Ushum-Gal himself, the demon god of fire and death, appears to be the one who is in control of the creatures that roam this world, and he has appointed them as guardians of the chantry, a place of worship and sacrifice.
The chorus then focuses on two specific locations within this world, the Absu of Eridu and Erech. The Absu is a term that refers to the primal abyss or void from which all things originated, according to Mesopotamian mythology. Eridu and Erech, on the other hand, were both ancient cities that once existed in Mesopotamia, with their own corresponding deities and cults. The lyrics seem to suggest that there is a kind of cosmic struggle or tension between the Absu of Eridu and Erech, with each calling upon the faithful to worship and honor them. The bedlam and chaos of this world is always present and always awake, and it is the duty of mortals to choose which Absu they will serve.
Overall, the lyrics to The Absu of Eridu & Erech are full of symbolism and allusions to ancient mythology, painting a picture of a world that is both terrifying and awe-inspiring. The lyrics invite the listener to engage with this world and to ponder its mysteries, while also warning of the dangers that come with worshipping the gods of chaos.
