Their current lineup consists of Hoffmann, vocalist Mark Tornillo, guitarists Uwe Lulis and Philip Shouse, drummer Christopher Williams and bassist Martin Motnik. Before arriving at their current lineup, Accept has undergone numerous lineup changes, being Hoffmann the last remaining original member since its inception, and he is the only band member to appear on each album.
Accept played an important role in the development of speed and thrash metal, and they were part of the German heavy metal scene, which emerged in the early to mid-1980s. They have also been cited as an influence or inspiration by a number of acts, including Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, Testament, Anthrax, Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Overkill, Exodus, and Annihilator, as well as fellow Germans such as Helloween, Blind Guardian, Doro, Sodom, Rage, and Grave Digger. Accept achieved its first commercial success with their fifth studio album Balls to the Wall (1983), which is the band's only album to be certified gold in the United States and Canada, and spawned their well-known hit "Balls to the Wall".
Accept have broken up and reformed multiple times. They first split up in 1989, several months after the release of Eat the Heat (which was their only album with Dirkschneider's initial replacement David Reece), but reformed in 1992 and released three more albums before disbanding again in 1997. After briefly reuniting in 2005, Accept announced their third reunion in 2009, with former T.T. Quick frontman Mark Tornillo replacing Dirkschneider (who declined to participate), and the band has recorded five albums with him: Blood of the Nations (2010), Stalingrad (2012), Blind Rage (2014), The Rise of Chaos (2017) and Too Mean to Die (2021); each of those albums renewed Accept's popularity in Germany and entered the top ten charts there.

Blood gets hot, he wants it now,
He wants it rare, but something's there
That holds him back from the attack
Before the kill he feels the thrill
Something is there, that cools him off
And it seems some kind of tough
They wait for you, they're getting big
But they can hide, their lust is huge
Some are nice, and some are false
And all they want is that you believe
That they are just like you and me
They're talking sweet, they're acting calm
They are so smooth, they're so nice
But if they could they would bite
Dogs on leads, dogs on leads
Dogs on leads, dogs on leads
Oh, it's so mean
No one knows that they're outrageous
As long as they are treated gracious
Once cut off they're getting wild
But someone's there, who leads the lead
And they can walk in a line
And they dance on a rein
Something's there that cools them off
But it seems some kind, some kind of tough
They're all
Dogs on leads, dogs on leads
Dogs on leads, dogs on leads
Dogs on leads
And the sweetest of the sweetest
Is a hunter held on leads
They're the nicest, they're the calmest
No one knows it, who's the beast
Don't you turn 'rough, it's too dangerous
So you better catch the lead
If they're hungry, they might hurry
And you better feed the need
Dogs on leads, dogs on leads
Dogs on leads, dogs on leads
Oh yeah!
Dogs on leads, dogs on leads
Dogs on leads
Dogs, dogs on leads
The song "Dogs On Leads" by Accept speaks about the tension that arises between a predator and his prey. The lyrics depict a scenario where a predator is eying his prey and is ready to attack, but something is holding him back. It seems that he is not attacking out of fear or inhibition- "something's there that cools him off". The lyrics then go on to describe how some predators, like dogs, can be tamed and made to be obedient on leads.
The song also makes a general comment about how people can be two-faced just like animals, putting on a mask to appear nice and sweet, but with the intent of engaging in deceitful and harmful behavior. The lyrics advise that we should be cautious of such individuals, who are like 'dogs on leads'.
Interestingly, the song seems to convey a moral message about animal rights and treatment, calling for people to be cautious with their own behavior towards animals. Moreover, the song appears to be challenging the conventional notions of 'beastliness' by depicting predators such as dogs as capable of being tamed and controlled.
