My favorite part about the ice physics is they aren't even "not supposed to be like that" or something because the insane acceleration is actually used as an exploration mechanic. Bless those Monolithsoft game devs.

I remember going down the ice slide and it reminded me of Mario 64 so the slide music was in my head, and I was like stuck up against a wall and after 2 seconds I died.

If someone asked me what the most overrated song in this game was, I'd say this, easily. My inner hipster wants to hate this theme for how popular it is, but I just can't bring myself to hate it. It's a really good music, and I get what people see in it. To get the negatives out of the way first, I think the first minute or so of the piece is a tad boring, with long periods of time with nothing really happening. The song gets better as it goes on though. For one, the atmosphere, the reason so many people love this song, is on point. It creates the feeling of a massive, peaceful snowy mountain, illuminated by beautiful light incredibly perfectly. I don't think they could've picked a better song for this. The music is incredibly peaceful and makes me want to lie back and go to sleep. There's also a decent amount of sadness in the piece, the cold isolation one might find themselves with a present theme throughout. The instruments were also a perfect choice. The piano is played absolutely beautifully, and the percussion, especially with its echo gives the song an extra kick to make it a unique song in its style. Finally, my favourite parts of the song are the unorthodox rhythms present throughout. I'm bad at picking up stuff like this, but the rhythms like at 1:24 sound syncopated and feel incredibly fresh. I've heard this song for multiple hours of my life, and they still catch me off guard, keeping the song interesting. I don't think this song is nearly as good as the day version, overall. I do find it to be a phenomenal piece of music though, even if I really don't want to admit it.

5 year later edit: Yeah I don't really like how I approached this comment. It's really dumb to approach how much you like any given music from a perceived perception of popularity. My opinions on the piece haven't changed. I still think its fantastic, it's just not a personal favourite, I just think how I approached it here was

I mean you're literally wandering through a desolate mountaintop alone at night, sometimes in blizzarding weather. minimalism is pretty appropriate in that setting, no?

Got to be honest. I hoenstly can't see how the Night Theme even compares to the Day Theme. The only part in this that seems memorable to me is 2:04.
