Recently Adam and Joe have reached cult status again, this time through the medium of radio. Filling in for Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington, they began a 3 year stint at London-only radio station Xfm in 2003, which spawned a series of popular podcasts. Their move to BBC6 Music in 2007 reached larger audiences and their mix of shambolic presentation, pop-culture discussion and original comedy songs (pitted against each other in “Song Wars”) has earned their Saturday morning show a hardcore fanbase and, somewhat reluctantly, its own unexplainable catchphrase: “STEPHEN!”
The Right and Wrong Song
Adam & Joe Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Lies seem to be true when truth comes from the liar
Clown will never teach nothing to king
King will always be dumber than the clown
Oh
King loves the queen for what she is
She is with the king to realize her wishes
Clown confessed the truth to his majesty the king
Right is to the wrong what wrong is to the right
True seems to be lie when truth comes from the clown
Oh
The lyrics of "The Right and Wrong Song" by Adam & Joe delve deep into the complex dynamics of truth and deception, power and manipulation, and love and betrayal. The opening line, "Right is to the wrong what wrong is to the right," sets the stage by suggesting a parallel between opposing forces. It implies that just as wrong can be seen as the counterpart to right, truth can blur with lies, and what is perceived as correct may actually be misguided.
The line, "Lies seem to be true when truth comes from the liar," underscores the idea that the source of information can heavily influence its credibility. It speaks to the unsettling reality that falsehoods can appear convincing when spoken by those adept at deception. This further complicates the distinction between right and wrong, as the line between truth and lies becomes blurred.
The reference to the relationship between a clown and a king adds a layer of symbolism to the lyrics. The clown, often associated with jest and frivolity, is contrasted with the serious and authoritative figure of the king. The notion that the clown will never teach anything to the king suggests that wisdom and insight do not always align with position or status. Similarly, the idea that the king will always be dumber than the clown challenges conventional assumptions about intelligence and knowledge.
The complex web of relationships intensifies with the introduction of the queen, who is depicted as having her own motives and agency. The line, "King loves the queen for what she is, she is with the king to realize her wishes," highlights the complexity of romantic relationships and the interplay of emotions and personal goals. The subsequent revelation that the queen is giving a poisonous kiss to the clown adds a sinister twist, implying betrayal and potentially fatal consequences. These intertwined narratives reinforce the theme of duality and the shifting nature of right and wrong, truth and deception.
