Unclean
Adam West Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
scowl falls when i turn away
unclean when you're getting nearer
running fast till the break of day
she follows me wherever i go
black cloak flowing and stars to show
where to find her i'll never know
unclean when i drink from the fountain
black acid burns me up from within
dirt all over me alright
it never washes away
dirt all over me tonight
why can't i ever escape?
The song "Unclean" by Adam West is a portrayal of a person's internal struggle, where the darkness within is projected onto the external world. The first verse entails the person looking in the mirror, and they see everything that is wrong with them. However, as they move away, their mood turns sour, and they become angrier. The person is never content with themselves, and the reflection they see only reinforces their unworthiness.
In the second verse, the person is haunted by a shadowy figure that follows them everywhere they go. The woman turns away from him, but he can still see her cloak flowing as she walks away. He is helpless against her, and he doesn't know how to shake her off. This could represent an embodiment of his inner demons that he feels helpless to fight.
The chorus speaks about the dirt that is all over him and how it never washes away, indicating that the person feels incapable of cleansing themselves of their inner demons. It speaks of the black acid that burns them up from within, suggesting a feeling of self-loathing and helplessness.
