Fool
AdriAnne Lenker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

I feel like a fool, yeah
Walking downhill with the dogs
You keep it cool
Watching my fire ignite
Heart out of sight
Body and mind fistfight
Heart out of sight
Body like a bat in flight
Oh, they say when it's right, it's right

We could be friends
You could love me through and through
If I were him
Would you be my family too?
Daddy's advice (advice-vice)
Hell in paradise
Mama's advice (advice-vice)
Cookin' up beans and rice
Oh, just say what it is that you want

Ooh
Ooh

Tommy had twins
Kenna and Lu-y tied the knot
Zoë and B
Built their house on the spot
We could watch a show (show)
We could watch a garden grow
We could grow old (old)
You could come in from the cold
Oh, just say what it is that you want

Jamie's in L.A
Ali found a five acre farm
Max is gonna play
Jon got a clown on his arm
Lucky's gonna flip (flip, flip)
Jer's gonna go for a dip (dip, dip)
Birds gotta fly (fly and fly)
I'll love you 'til I die
Oh, what more can I possibly say?

So if you wanna go, I say, "Baby, okay, okay"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Fool" by AdriAnne Lenker delves into a complex emotional journey of self-reflection, longing, and acceptance. The opening verse sets a contemplative tone as the singer feels like a fool while metaphorically walking downhill with the dogs. This imagery suggests a sense of vulnerability and perhaps a loss of control. The juxtaposition of "You keep it cool" indicates a contrasting dynamic, where the other person remains composed while the singer's emotions are ignited like a fire. The internal struggle between the heart and mind is highlighted by the line "Body and mind fistfight," showcasing the conflicting emotions at play.

The following verse shifts to a more intimate and introspective exploration of relationships. The mention of friendship and the desire for being loved "through and through" hints at a longing for deeper connection. The reference to familial bonds with lines like "If I were him, would you be my family too?" adds layers of complexity to the emotional landscape. The juxtaposition of parental advice with the comforting imagery of "Cookin' up beans and rice" paints a picture of domesticity and warmth amidst the uncertainty of relationships. The plea to "just say what it is that you want" underscores the theme of communication and clarity in relationships.

As the song progresses, the narrative broadens to encompass vignettes of various characters and their life events. The mention of Tommy's twins and couples tying the knot, as well as the image of building a house and growing old together, evoke a sense of community and shared experiences. The repetition of the line "just say what it is that you want" acts as a recurring motif, emphasizing the importance of authenticity and open communication in relationships. The imagery of coming in from the cold suggests a longing for warmth and connection, further highlighting the theme of emotional intimacy.

The final verse introduces a series of snapshots of different individuals and their pursuits, showcasing a diverse range of experiences and paths in life. The mention of love enduring till death and the question "what more can I possibly say?" express a deep-seated sense of commitment and emotional depth. The closing lines, "So if you wanna go, I say, 'Baby, okay, okay,'" suggest a bittersweet acceptance and willingness to let go if needed, encapsulating a mix of vulnerability and strength in facing uncertainties in relationships. Overall, "Fool" by AdriAnne Lenker navigates themes of love, connection, and acceptance with poetic sensitivity and introspection.

@Ryan-bv5ox

i kind of see it as a song being in a situationship type thing where the other person doesn’t know what they want but she also loves the person. the lyrics about her friends are to symbolize the passage of time while she’s been in that situation. i think the song is kind of about the possibilities that she can have with this other person if they committed? idk that’s how i interpret it!
