Sadness As A Gift
AdriAnne Lenker Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
A one, two, three, four
You and I both know
There is nothing more to say
Chance has shut her shining eyes
And turned her face away
You could write me someday, and I think you will
We could see the sadness as a gift and still
Feel too heavy to hold
Snow fallin'
I try to keep from callin'
Watch the spring turn to winter
Fireflies all frozen
The seasons go so fast
Thinking that this one was gonna last
Maybe the question was too much to ask
Been searching for your eyes
All I see is blue skies
And that old man beats his crooked cane
It's time to let go
Leaning on the windowsill
You could write me someday, and I bet you will
We could see the sadness as a gift and still
The seasons go so fast
Thinking that this one was gonna last
Maybe the question was too much to ask
You and I could see into the same eternity
Every second brimming with a majesty
Oh, kiss so sweet, so fine
You could hear the music inside my mind
And you showed me a place
I'll find even when I'm old
Just leaning on the windowsill
You could write me someday, and I hope you will
We could see the sadness as a gift and still
The seasons go so fast
Thinking that this one was gonna last
Maybe the question was too much to ask
The lyrics of "Sadness As A Gift" by AdriAnne Lenker seem to convey a deep sense of nostalgia, longing, and acceptance of life's transient nature. The singer reflects on a connection with another person, acknowledging that there is nothing more to say and that fate has intervened in their relationship. The imagery of Chance shutting her eyes and turning away symbolizes the end or impossibility of something developing further. This acceptance is highlighted in the lines "We could see the sadness as a gift and still / Feel too heavy to hold," suggesting that while they understand the value of experiencing sadness, it can be overwhelming.
The changing seasons serve as a metaphor for the passage of time and the fleeting nature of relationships. The singer watches as spring turns to winter, emphasizing the impermanence of moments and emotions. The line "Thinking that this one was gonna last / Maybe the question was too much to ask" reflects a sense of yearning for permanence or clarity in a situation that may not offer such stability. The imagery of frozen fireflies further accentuates the idea of halted moments and unattainable lightness.
The singer expresses a sense of loss and longing, searching for something that seems out of reach. The repetition of looking for the other person's eyes but only seeing blue skies suggests a sense of emptiness or unfulfilled connection. The mention of an old man beating his cane symbolizes the passing of time and the inevitability of letting go, perhaps indicating the need to move on from the past and accept change.
The lyrics also touch on the idea of finding beauty and meaning in life's fleeting moments, recognizing the preciousness of time and connections. The mention of seeing into the same eternity and every second being filled with majesty suggests a deep appreciation for the present moment and the potential for finding joy despite sadness. The final lines express a hope for continued connection and understanding between the singer and the other person, even as they grapple with the transience of life and love. Through these poignant and reflective lyrics, AdriAnne Lenker captures the complex emotions of longing, acceptance, and finding the bittersweet beauty in life's impermanence.
