Sara
Alice Lyrics

Now I don't know but I've been told
There's a nun having fun and she lost her soul
She's got cash, she got laid
Now she's dealin' with me and she gonna get paid
She got caught with the bishop
She got caught with the abbot
Even cardinal sin tried to feed her habit
Now we get whores and pimps and skanks
But when your judgement came down even he gave thanks

Whatever happened to me
Can't remember my name
Flying so high on angelic wings
Flew too close to the flame

Sister Sara
It's your penalty for eternity
(For eternity)
Did you think that you were saved
(For eternity)
You forget your old identity who you used to be
(For eter... sara)
Sister Sara
So depraved

Oh, come O ye faithless, get in line
You're gonna drown in the water, turned to wine
And you're all going to wallow in your sin and shame
You had every opportunity to call His name
Don't look surprised, don't be in shock
You'll be a lovely little demon in my private stock
I'm just doing my job to pull you down
'Cause it's a one way ticket down to Dragontown

(Whatever happened to me)
You got caught in my web
(Can't remember my name)
You made your own bed here
(Flying so high on angelic wings)
And now you must keep me well fed
(Flew too close to the flame)
You're mine, too bad,
You're here for me, you're just here for me

Sister Sara
It's your penalty for eternity
(For eternity)
Did you think that you were saved
(For eternity)
You forget your old identity who you used to be
(For eter... sara)
Sister Sara
So depraved

Moment to moment, hour to hour, for ever and ever
Time after time after time after time after time

(For eternity)
Sister Sara
It's your penalty for eternity
(For eternity)
Did you think that you were saved
(For eternity)
You forget your old identity who you used to be
(For eter... sara)

Sister Sara
So depraved

Overall Meaning

The song "Sister Sara" by Alice Cooper is about a nun who lost her soul and became involved in immoral activities. The lyrics describe how she got caught with a bishop, an abbot, and even Cardinal Sin, who tried to feed her habit. Despite her actions, the singer claims that even a whore or pimp would be better off than her because she is now "so depraved."

The chorus of the song is a warning that the nun's actions have consequences, and she will suffer for eternity. The singer portrays himself as the one who will bring her down and feed off her energy to keep himself alive. The final lines of the song emphasize the eternal nature of her punishment and her helplessness in the face of it.

The singer seems to be a demonic figure who is punishing the nun for her sins. The song can be seen as a critique of religious institutions and their treatment of women, as the nun's behavior is the result of a system that limits her choices and oppresses her. The song presents a bleak picture of the Catholic Church and its representatives, as they are portrayed as powerless against the demonic forces that come for Sister Sara.

@cbrooks0905 I’ve run into a similar situation many times. I’m mainly a guitarist and often I’ve ended up out of tune without noticing(thanks whammy bar). I’ve only studied music seriously for a few years but I have a few ideas on why this is the case.

Equal temperament is already out of tune to some degree, certain intervals are slightly off. That’s been the standard in western music for centuries now, to the point it’s heard as in tune despite technically being off to varying degrees.

Then there’s the idea of concert pitch, which until the mid-20th century, wasn’t standardized to A440Hz. France previously used A435Hz, and period musicians use different reference depending on period and even composer.

Between reference pitch and temperament, I’d say there’s really no way to be perfectly in tune. There’s going to be some level of compromise made regardless. Unless an instrument is egregiously out of tune, the intervals will be recognizable. I’d argue intervals and their resulting harmony are significantly more important than the tuning, especially in regards to modern equal temperament.

What I find even wilder than all of that though, is that this variation is all contained within western musical theory. It’s just one of many systems used if one looks at music on a global scale. At this point I try to think of pitch more like visible light. You have a spectrum of color that changes at an infinitely small rate. What one considers distinct colors, how they’re divided into shades, and they ways they are combined, is entirely subjective. You’re given a color palette that ranges from 20Hz to 20,000Hz, how one paints with it is entirely up to preference.

(To anyone who made it this far, apologies for the essay..I’m a tad passionate about music)

To the snobs complaining about the piano
you’ve all missed the point. She’s played thousands of perfectly tuned pianos. Here
 in this YouTube video
she’s playing this piano. She’s playing this piano like no one ever has or may never again. Incredible performance and sound. I cried.

poopy loopy

i didn't notice the piano was out of tune, but i did notice the poorer sound quality. Then i checked the description and realized it wasn't josh rogosin on the audio, which makes sense since the sound seemed muffled/dry and less rich to me (maybe off-tuning contributed to this). i would love to listen to this but the sound just makes it uncomfortable to listen to.

@woojalitus I'm sorry to tell, but if you think that sound quality and instrument sound quality is snobbish, you're stuck in the 1930s. Fortunately, classical piano has been something for everyone for a long time now.
There is nothing wrong with pointing out that it is a pity that the piano is not tuned properly. While it is true that renting a baby piano would have been more ideal (I think the budget is not an issue) at least a quick tuning would have made a difference to the quality of this great little concert.
It's very common to expect a quality deployment of microphones and sound production from the technicians. So far from being snobbish, one would expect a better sound. Something that in this case does not depend solely on the microphones but on the tuning of the piano.
I'm sure you wouldn't have liked it if the Garret, Capaldi or Sting concert had been recorded with the sound of a mobile phone. I'm sure they would have got a sound out of the microphone "like no one ever has or may never again", but that's not the point. You expect to have a minimum of recording quality. The same goes for piano tuning.
Congratulations on the concert, to Alice Sara and to NPR.

“The quality of a pianist should not be measured by how they sound on a good piano. It should be measured by how they sound on a BAD piano”

@Álvaro Garrido "I'm sorry to tell, but if you think that sound quality and instrument sound quality is snobbish, you're stuck in the 1930s" And I'm sorry to tell, but if you think that sound quality and instrument sound quality is what music is about, then you're focusing on the wrong things... "There is nothing wrong with pointing out that it is a pity that the piano is not tuned properly" there's however something wrong in not understanding when a mellower, slightly out of tune piano sound is seeked and fits better...

Álvaro Garrido

@foljs ok..

Bill Evans always said if you get a piano that’s a bit off you weather it through, because that’s the job at hand. This performance is marvellous.

Daniele

That piano couldn't even imagine it could sound like that.
