Serial Killer
Aliens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As you lie asleep
Dreaming you're awake
Quiet time
It seems to relate

24 hour cycle
Divided by 3
Even the blind seem to feel what they cannot see

Yet the cats still come out at night to mate
And the sparrows still sing in the morning

Bacon and eggs
On your plate
Headlines read
They fill your head
Can you stomach your own mind
Leaving clues yourself to find

Yet the cats still come out at night to mate
And the sparrows still sing in the morning

Overall Meaning

In the first verse, the lyrics depict a dream-like state where the singer is describing someone asleep and dreaming that they are awake. This can be seen as a metaphor for a false sense of reality or a lack of self-awareness. The mention of "quiet time" suggests that this person may be disconnected from their inner thoughts and emotions.

The next line, "It seems to relate," implies that there is some sort of connection or meaning behind this state of being. It could be interpreted as the idea that even in moments of stillness or silence, there is a deeper understanding or message that can be derived.

The second verse introduces the concept of time, specifically a 24-hour cycle divided by 3, which is 8. This could symbolize the idea of balance or harmony in life. The mention of the blind feeling what they cannot see suggests that even those who are unaware or ignorant can still sense something beyond their physical perception.

The chorus, "Yet the cats still come out at night to mate, and the sparrows still sing in the morning," reflects the persistence of natural instincts and rhythms in life. Despite the complexities of human existence, there are still basic animalistic behaviors and patterns that persist regardless of our conscious awareness or understanding.

The third verse shifts the focus to more everyday experiences, such as having bacon and eggs on one's plate and reading headlines that fill the mind. This implies a sense of routine or mundane existence that can easily distract or consume one's thoughts. The question posed, "Can you stomach your own mind, leaving clues yourself to find," suggests a deeper introspection and self-reflection. It questions whether one can truly confront and accept their own thoughts and actions, and whether they are aware of the signs and messages they may be leaving for themselves.

Overall, these lyrics explore themes of self-awareness, perception, and the persistence of natural rhythms in life. They invite the listener to contemplate the meaning behind seemingly ordinary experiences and to consider the balance between conscious and subconscious thoughts.

I'm a freelance journalist and film-maker in Australia. I often try to 'give a voice' to people or causes that are ignored or neglected or overlooked by the mainstream media.

I think Nick Broomfield has done something similar here with his documentary about Aileen Wuornos. He is correct when he says that Aileen was often betrayed by those closest to her. That started with her parents when she was born, then her grandfather, and later on with Tyria Moore.

Even the other kids in school mistreated her.

To some extent, I think Aileen's love for Tyria was a misplaced loyalty because Tyria sold her out and got involved in financial movie-deal discussions with creeps in Hollywood. (So did the cops, and Steve Glazer with Arlene Pralle.)

I don't even believe that Aileen Wuornos was a natural-born lesbian. She certainly wasn't a natural-born killer. I think her experiences with bad men eventually made her that way. (While Tyria certainly looked like a lesbian, Aileen did not. She looked beautiful when she married the older man, Lewis Gratz Fell.)

I don't believe in the death penalty. I don't think it avenges a crime or solves or repairs anything. Aileen only wanted it because she saw death as preferable to a life sentence in prison. That makes some of her confession and testimony questionable. She said she "had to be executed" because if she wasn't she would go on to kill others. She was encouraging them to get-a-move-on and proceed with the death sentence.

On the other hand, Aileen's murder victims were killed for only small amounts of money. One of them had less than $40. That worked against her at trial. (If he had a lot of money, robbery was a more understandable motivation for her. But by killing him for only 'small change' it looks like her true motive was just sheer killing, not profit.)

The term 'serial killer' got used too many times in the entire Aileen Wuornos debacle. I'm from a media background and I can tell you that the media following her case were constantly looking for attention-grabbing headlines. The 'shock value' of the case is all that matters to some media people. Jerks, I think you call them.

Many people say they hope Aileen is now in a better and more peaceful place. I just wish she had that peace while she was alive in this world. She had a run of bad luck and a lengthy series of setbacks and tragedies that combined to create her hellish life.

Deep inside, she was a decent person doing her best in a bad situation, and she was said to possess a very warm and beautiful humanity in many ways.

So many people in the American prison system are people who had troubled upbringings and no chance from the very beginning.

Rest in peace, Aileen. Catch you in the next life. We all could have done more to help save you.

This is the only killer I've ever felt sorry for, she was betrayed by everyone she ever loved and I can't help but wonder what life would have been like for her had she found her happiness

@JulieMarieBB

She WAS in fact brutally raped , tortured and abused so much, she was sent over the edge and rightfully so! Ñot saying each one did. But, brutally raped tortured and had crowbar shoved in her! His sick fantasy made her hate men. They should not paint each one just good ol boys. Breaking the law and buying $ex! They weren't all good guys! At least acknowledge the trauma that in fact stared all his! Which one of you can say u would handle that pain and she snapped!

@laurenvega-cruz4718
