Theme
Aliens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

First there was Earth
Then there was Man
And all of Man's problems
Then Earth was no more
He shook it all to the core
With all his uncertainty and his fear of dying alone
He took all he could take, the color out the sky
Then it came for some to say goodbye
And all the bad aliens fled to a sacred land
They found some love and peace of mind
When all they hoped they could find was the will to try again
And all the bad aliens left our reality for a brighter fantasy
Thinking they could be living proof, that we can overcome solitude
First, came the second wave
Of all the hurt, all the hate, all the pain
All their lies, all their guilt, all their shame
And time won’t change a thing
In this never-ending game of chance
And all the bad aliens fled to a sacred land
And lost their love and peace of mind
Forgot how much time they’d spent in the promised land
And all the bad aliens left our reality for a brighter fantasy
It was all more of the same
Just all more of the same...
I don’t mind
I figured we’re all wasting time
Nothing’s quite as it seems
And I’ll try to live a dream
I don’t mind
I figured we’re all wasted time
Nothing’s quite as it seems
And I’m trying to live the dream
I don’t mind…
It’s only time, baby
I don’t mind…
It’s only time, baby
It’s only time, baby

It’s only time, baby
It’s only time, baby

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Alien's song "Theme" explore the idea of humanity's impact on Earth and the consequences that follow. The first few lines establish the sequence of events, beginning with the creation of Earth and leading up to the destruction of it due to humanity's actions. The lines "He took all he could take, the color out the sky" allude to the damage caused by pollution, specifically climate change. The lyric "Then it came for some to say goodbye" suggests that some humans survived the destruction, perhaps escaping to another planet.

The song then shifts to the perspective of the "bad aliens" who are fleeing to a "sacred land" to find solace from their own failures. The line "Thinking they could be living proof, that we can overcome solitude" implies that the aliens are seeking to find meaning and hope in their new world, even though it is not their own. The second wave of hurt, hate, pain, lies, guilt, and shame in the second verse amplifies the idea of repeated destruction and failure.

The song concludes with the singer's acceptance of reality and a desire to live in a dream, recognizing that time is the only constant.

Overall, "Theme" explores the cycle of destruction and the attempt at finding redemption and hope in the aftermath.

Horner does a fine job of including just enough silimarities to Goldsmith's original score so that 'Aliens' sounds grounded in the same story universe, but he never simply duplicates Goldsmith. Very effective score composed under very difficult circumstances.

@teddibearsworld

I think, probably due to the pressures and time constraints, he probably made it sound a bit closer to Goldsmith than he was comfortable with, but you're right. Cameron wanted the same feel for the music, and that's what he got. I used to criticize Horner in his earlier work for his similar sounding scores.. lacking originality.. especially this score. First time I ever heard of Horner was The Wrath of Khan. Portions of this score.. when the shit hits the fan.. are VERY similar to that movie.. to the point of lifting motifs and riffs DIRECTLY from WOK. But I never knew until recently the problems with the constant re-editing of the film, and the pressure Horner was under. Taken into account.. this score is a masterpiece ! And... as a kid.. you really appreciate, and wanna hear the action cues. I never really appreciated the subtle beauty of the quieter pieces ... until now.
James.., Mr. Horner ,sir.. you work great under pressure. It took years for him to get his due !

@bodhid

You're one of the few who picked up on it judging by the comments who all seem to think the series started with Aliens.

@mikamiteru57

He was a treasure for the world of film making and music!

James Horner will be remembered :'(

@TobyLawson1980

01:30 I love the use of the "Gayanne Ballet Suite", such a haunting but beautiful piece. It gives the sense of the loneliness of space here, just as it did in '2001'.

@gordonk9001

Mhm I presume they took the inspiration from 2001 as well

@pianoman8642

It was also used in one of the Jack Ryan films.

@Afterburner215

Oh that's the track that plays at the beginning of Jupter Mission: 18 months later?

@HealthySkepticism1775

@Piano Man
Good catch. But was it Clear and Present Danger?

Or possibly Patriot Games.
