Iraheta is a Salvadoran born in Glendale, California. According to her parents, she has been singing since she was a toddler. Before rising to prominence, she usually sang in local Latin supermarkets.
In 2006, Iraheta won the Telemundo reality show Quinceañera, where she sang in both English and Spanish. The prize was a reward of USD $50,000 and a recording contract, but only the reward money was ever granted.
In 2009, Allison Iraheta competed on American Idol. She achieved acclaim for her rock sound and unique style, making it into the finals. Allison remained on the show until being eliminated at the final four, finishing in 4th place. The mentor of that week, Slash, praised Iraheta, saying, "Allison didn't deserve to be voted off so soon. She has amazing potential." American Idol music director Rickey Minor was "absolutely shocked" at her departure.
After her elimination on Idol, Iraheta made guest appearances on Live with Regis and Kelly, The Ellen Degeneres Show, Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Larry King Live, local FOX television affiliates, and numerous radio stations nation-wide. She performed on the season eight finale of American Idol, including a group medley of Pink's "So What" with her fellow contestants and a duet of "Time After Time" with original artist Cyndi Lauper.

You Don't Know Me
Allison Iraheta Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm a voice you didn't wanna hear
I'm a page of a book that you read to fast,
But I'm still here.
You never cared never tried never even asked,
Maybe I didn't wanna say
You shut your eyes told your lies and you had your laugh
And that's okay
[Chorus]
Cause you don't know me
You don't wanna know what's real
And I'm not sorry
For who I am for what I feel, cause you don't know me.
I got more on my mind that I've never told
I've got pain that you've never felt
I've got the scars I can deal with it on my own
I've got stories that I'd never tell.
But maybe it's just as well
[Chorus]
I'm strong, I'm a mess altogether an emotional wreck
I can scream I can beg you to see I'm alive
I'm awake I'm unglued
I'm not gonna break down, no.
You don't know me
You don't wanna know what's real
And I'm not sorry
[Chorus]
Cause you don't know me
You don't wanna know what's real
And I'm not sorry
For who I am, you don't understand, just how I feel.
Cause you don't know me.
Allison Iraheta's "You Don't Know Me" is a powerful, emotional song with meaningful lyrics. The singer in the song feels ignored, as if they are a "ghost" or "voice" that has been overlooked by someone they care about deeply. Despite feeling invisible, the singer is still there, still feeling pain and still experiencing life. The line "I've got scars I can deal with it on my own" reinforces this idea - that the singer has been through hardships and has survived them, all on their own.
The chorus of the song is particularly poignant, with the singer repeating the phrase "you don't know me". This serves as a reminder that even though someone may think they understand another person, they can never truly know or comprehend their thoughts and feelings. The last verse of the song is perhaps the most empowering - the singer asserts that they are strong, despite being a "mess" and an "emotional wreck". They are determined to persevere and not let anyone break them down.
Overall, "You Don't Know Me" is a song with touching lyrics that can resonate with anyone who has ever felt unseen or unheard. It reminds listeners that everyone has their own struggles that they face every day, and that it's important to acknowledge and respect each other's experiences.
