Ampersand
Amanda Palmer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I walk down my street at night
The city lights are strange and violent
I am comforted by the approaching sounds of trucks and sirens
Even though the world's so bad
These men rush out to help the dying
And though I am no use to them
I do my part by simply smiling
The ghetto boys are catcalling me
As I pull my keys from my pocket
I wonder if this method of courtship
Has ever been effective
Has any girl in history said
Sure, you seem so nice, let's get it on
Still, I always shock them when I answer
Hi my name's Amanda
And I'm not gonna live my life on one side of an ampersand
And even if I went with you I'm not the girl you think I am
And I'm not gonna match you
'Cause I'll lose my voice completely yeah
I'm just gonna watch you
'Cause I'm not the one that's crazy
Yeah

I have wasted years of my life
Agonizing up at the fires
It started when I thought that to be strong you must be flame retardant
And now to dress the wounds cause into question
How authentic they are
There is always someone criticizing me
She just likes paying hospital
Lying in my bed
I remember what you said
There's no such thing as accidents

But you've got the headstone all ready
All craved up and pretty
Your sick satisfaction
Those his and hers matching
The daisies all push up'n
Pairs to the horizons
Your hands full of ketchup
It's nice that you're trying
The headstone's all ready
All carved up and pretty
Your sick satisfaction
Those his and hers matching
The daises all push up'n
Pairs to the horizons
Your eyes full of ketchup
It's nice that you're trying

And I'm not gonna live my life on one side of an ampersand
And even if I went with you I'm not the girl you think I am
And I'm not gonna match you
'Cause I'll lose my voice completely yeah
I'm just gonna watch you
Cause I'm not the one that's crazy
Yeah
I'm not the one that's crazy
Yeah…

As I wake up to a cough
The blaze consumed the block
But poetically stopped at my apartment
And my housemates are all sleeping soundly
And nobody deserves to die
But you were awful adamant
That if I didn't love you
Then you have just one alternative

And I may be romantic
And I may risk my life for it
But I ain't gonna die for you
You know I ain't no Juliet
And I'm not gonna watch you wanna burn yourself out baby
No I'm not gonna stop you
'Cause I'm not the one that's crazy, yeah

I'm not the one that's crazy, yeah
I'm not the one that's crazy…

Overall Meaning

The song "Ampersand" is a reflection on the complexities of life and relationships. Amanda Palmer sings about walking down her street at night and feeling comforted by the sounds of the city. She contemplates the role she plays in the world and wonders if simply smiling is enough. The song then takes a turn as she discusses being objectified by men and how she shocks them by revealing her name and refusing to conform to their expectations. The chorus of the song is a declaration of her individuality and rejection of societal conventions. Palmer sings that she will not live her life defined by someone else or be silenced by trying to match their expectations.

The second verse discusses the pressure to be strong and the criticisim Palmer endures. She references a conversation she had with someone who told her, "there's no such thing as accidents", and juxtaposes it with the image of a headstone, suggesting that life is fragile and can end abruptly. She then references a fire that consumed a nearby block and how it poetically stopped at her apartment, reminding her that life can be unpredictable and arbitrary. The song concludes with Palmer rejecting the idea of dying for someone else, stating that she is not willing to conform or sacrifice her own happiness for someone else's.

@Oreoreogirl

i listened to the "who killed amanda palmer" album when i was suicidal. Ampersand helped me a lot . especially at "i may be romantic, i may risk my life for it but i aint gonna die for you" and then i made a sort of declaration to myself and the world that I AM NOT HIS JULIET

@paigeeverett4624

Don't die. It will pass. All things do. If it doesn't, hopefully you can find a way to get medicated.

@DavidLindes

medicated... and/or other treatment/help/support/etc.

@CheeseBodyBeing

I told a friend that I wanted to kill myself and they told me "suicide affects more people and much worse than you think. People you don't think off will become depressed and put it on themselves." Please, don't commit suicide. Stay here on Earth we have cookies and a lot of people that care for you.

@DavidLindes

Charles Francsics I'm curious: was that something you'd thought about before your friend said it? Because it's certainly true that suicide has far-reaching impacts... but I find that a lot of folks have thought deeply about that, even if they sometimes forget it.

@DavidLindes

Also: why are we all responding to a 9 year old comment as if it's a current statement? I mean, I'm personally trying to focus on concepts in more recent comments, but... just saying.

I think this song is about not wanting to be the other half to someone elese's whole, about being your own fucking person - I'm not gonna live my life on one side of on ampersand. Amanda is such an insightful woman.

"I wonder if this method of courtship
Has ever been effective
Has any girl in history said
Sure, you seem so nice, let's get it on
Still, I always shock them when I answer
Hi, my name's Amanda"

That seems like a really effect response.

@hepa00lepa
