Versus The World
Amon Amarth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One we were scum of the Earth
Now we've cleared our names
In Nifelheim came rebirth
Baptized in Mount Doom's flames
A decade now we've fought this war
Never yielding from our path
Our journeys take us to foreign shores
Where we let our metal blast
We've been battered and left for dead
We've been beaten and we have bled
But we always made it through - Vs the world
This may be our last quest
Before we're put to rest
The end is coming soon - Vs the world
Warriors of the grave tooks us south
Hell bent on genocide
They made us face the brutal truth
This would be no easy ride
Grotesque creatues of the sky
Met with us on winter fields
Christian god cast aside - Massacre of hallowed eve
We've been battered and left for dead
We've been beaten and we have bled
But we always made it through - Vs the world
This may be our last quest
Before we're put to rest
The end is coming soon - Vs the world
Persian demons brought us south
On merciless campaign
We've raided the western shores
Always going against the grain
All these years we've fought to win
And sometimes almost died
I tell you now we won't give in
Without a vicious fight
We've been battered and left for dead

We've been beaten and we have bled
Versus the world

Overall Meaning

Amon Amarth's "Versus the World" tells the story of a band of warriors who have fought for a decade and survived battles and near-death experiences. Through their struggles, they have established themselves as worthy warriors who have "cleared their names" and found "rebirth" in Nifelheim. The song describes their journeys to foreign shores where they let their "metal blast" and their battles against grotesque creatures of the sky and Persian demons.

The lyrics convey a sense of pride and determination, as the warriors refuse to give in without a fight. They have faced the brutal truth of war, but have always made it through, even when battered and left for dead. However, there is an underlying sense of impending doom as they prepare for what may be their last quest before they are "put to rest". The end is coming soon, but the warriors are still willing to fight "versus the world".

The song can be interpreted as a tribute to the perseverance and strength of the human spirit. It celebrates the warrior's refusal to give in and their commitment to fighting for what they believe in, even when faced with overwhelming odds.

Death in Fire when I was a 16 year old kid discovering metal, the video clip on TV with these men windmill headbanging on a live stage playing a style that was dark but ultra melodic at the same time. I thought I'd come into a goldmine.

@goblincooker

@ProfessorPuffyPants

Still my favorite album of all time, dont care what you think.

@yoe91

of Amon Amarth, or of all bands altogether ? If it's option 2, what's your second top album of all-time after this one ?

@ProfessorPuffyPants

@@yoe91 favorite of all time. The second is actually a really hard question. This album is special to me because I listened to it so much in high school when I was getting into metal and I love how grandiose this one sounds while still having the old school super condensed death metal tone. My next would be a tie between :
Carach angren: where the corpses sink forever
Gojira: terra incognita
All shall perish : price of existence
Job for a cowboy: suneater
Watain: sworn to the dark

I have to put some more thought into this lol
