A member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra during her youth, Winehouse signed to Simon Fuller's 19 Management in 2002 and soon recorded a number of songs before signing a publishing deal with EMI. She also formed a working relationship with producer Salaam Remi through these record publishers. Winehouse's debut album, Frank, was released in 2003. Many of the album's songs were influenced by jazz and, apart from two covers, were co-written by Winehouse. Frank was a critical success in the UK and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. The song "Stronger Than Me" won her the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.
Winehouse released her follow-up album, Back to Black, in 2006, which went on to become an international success and one of the best-selling albums in UK history. At the 2007 Brit Awards it was nominated for British Album of the Year, and she received the award for British Female Solo Artist. The song "Rehab" won her a second Ivor Novello Award. At the 50th Grammy Awards in 2008, she won five awards, tying the then record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night and becoming the first British woman to win five Grammys, including three of the General Field "Big Four" Grammy Awards: Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year (for "Rehab"), as well as Best Pop Vocal Album.
Winehouse was plagued by drug and alcohol addiction. She died of alcohol poisoning on 23 July 2011, at the age of 27. After her death, Back to Black temporarily became the UK's best-selling album of the 21st century. VH1 ranked Winehouse 26th on their list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music.

Kept his dick wet
With his same old safe bet
Me and my head high
And my tears dry
Get on without my guy
You went back to what you knew
So far removed from all that we went through
My odds are stacked
I'll go back to black
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to
I go back to us
I love you much
It's not enough
You love blow, and I love puff
And life is like a pipe
And I'm a tiny penny rolling up the walls inside
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to
Black
Black
Black
Black
Black
Black
Black
I go back to
I go back to
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to black
The song "Back to Black" by Amy Winehouse is a heartbreaking ballad about the end of a relationship. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a woman struggling to move on from a man who has left her feeling abandoned and alone. The opening lines of the song, "He left no time to regret, kept his dick wet with his same old safe bet" highlight the painful realization that the man she thought loved her was more interested in his own appetites than in her feelings.
The second verse, "We only said goodbye with words, I died a hundred times, you go back to her, and I go back to, I go back to us" speaks to the sense of loss and regret the singer feels as she replays the breakup in her mind over and over again. As much as she longs to move on, she can't help but compare every new experience to the one she shared with her former lover. The repeated refrain of "I go back to black" is a clever way to encapsulate the feeling of depression and despair that follows a breakup.
Overall, "Back to Black" is a powerful commentary on the complexities of love and heartbreak. By being honest and raw in her portrayal of the singer's emotions, Amy Winehouse has created a timeless classic that speaks to anyone who has ever suffered through a difficult breakup.

You returned to your old habits and patterns
So far removed from all that we went through

The chances of me succeeding without him are low
I'll go back to black

We only said goodbye with words
We did not have a proper closure

It's not enough
But my love is not sufficient to make you stay
You love blow, and I love puff
We have different addictive habits in our lives
And life is like a pipe
Life is unpredictable and unstable
And I'm a tiny penny rolling up the walls inside
I feel small and helpless in this world
Black
Feeling depressed and hopeless
I go back to
I go back to feeling this way
