El Chivo
Ana Belén Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

These lyrics tell the story of a character who is fed up with being despised and decides to take revenge on those who have looked down on him. He does this by writing a perfect note that details every hidden aspect of the setup that has caused his frustration. He explains that he was the one who took the fall for the sake of power but is no longer interested in being the scapegoat. He presents his resignation and says that now they have to face the consequences of their actions without him as the sacrificial lamb. The lyrics suggest that the character has given up his power and is ready to leave behind his position as the fallen angel.

The second paragraph talks about how the character has broken the agreement and has given up the future by selling the wood and eternal fire, which are powerful symbols in the context of the song. He has betrayed his role as the chivo (scapegoat) and has now taken control by giving away the keys to hell, mailing Satan a trident, stolen goods, and a good pair of horns. These lyrics depict a character who has had enough and decides to take control of his destiny by relinquishing his power and handing over the reins to someone or something else.
