I don't even need to listen to the entire recording, and I can already tell you why this version stands out among SOOOO many, despite it not being note-for-note perfect in some spots. Mr. Watts gets that it's all about phrasing. It's never really about the notes (something so many pianists forget). It's about meaning. It's about can you make a particular phrase say something coherent, musically. That's why he can stretch phrases and add as much rubato and do whatever he wants, and listeners happily go along for the ride. He sort of plays like Horowitz (his posture at the piano is even reminiscent of Horowitz). Watts clearly didn't just pick up the superficial from Horowitz. Many know that, if nothing else, he was a master when it came to phrasing. Thank goodness it rubbed off on Watts big time. I could go on and on, but it's about the phrasing folks! If more pianists would worry about that, they could change the planet. :-)

And also, now I respect pianist Andre watts. He has his own style, own interpretation, and not exaggerated. He plays same with the score. His technique is sparkling and perfection.  I wish I was there!!

Oh. My. God.

Ferocity. Grandeur. And I would add Profundity. Unforgettable.

Thank you very much for posting this.

@greid36

This is the optimal performer of all times!! I wonder how all the great Pianist would rank this performances!!

@oldschoolchartist

I wish this post would be read by Mr. Watts because I have a request.  I should like to hear him play two romantic pieces since he plays with such passion.  The first is, "We could make such beautiful music together."  And the second is "Please be careful with my heart," with Bebo Valdes.  I know he'll never read this, but here's hoping anyway.  Oh, heck, while I'm at it, throw in a third, "Stella by starlight," by Victor Young.
